If I'm Jank I would take it in a heart beat. There is nothing but an upside for him. Larry Brown should turn this program around and Jank can then take advantage of what is built for yet another promotion.

The ISU job will be highly sought after, primarily because the team is ready set for a successful year and an NCAA run. I suspect Chris Collins might get a call. However, I doubt he would take the job.

Wouldn't Dan Muller be one of the top candidates?

It has been reported they are paying Jerrance 450 K---and Jank is being offered 1 MIL to be an assistant?? That would have to make him one of the highest paid assistants in the Country I would think? SMU may be a latteral step (or less) now (for basketball)---but for that kind of money & the promise of being the head coach soon in the best basketball conference...hard to turn down that opportunity IMO.

loyalty carries only so far...Jank has given a good chunk of his life to ISU - he's not being disloyal to take the SMU job....
but every D-I coach is competitive and wants to complete at the highest level -so I cannot imagine he'd turn down a move that's guaranteed
to make him a Big East head coach in a couple years...
Then when you throw in the $$ - he would of course look for the security of his family and there's absolutely no way ISU can counteroffer a mil...

I agree he isn't being disloyal at all. It's a business after all.

But a good chunk of his life at ISU? He is 52 years old and has spent 5 years at ISU.

Money / Security / Higher level plus the chance to work with Larry Brown, who Jank has always idolized. That's ALOT. Throw in that it is only 4 hours or so to Tulsa, where his wife is from and has family....

....you may think differently than us old guys...
five years constitutes almost 25% of his independent, adult life since he's left college...
..and it also (may) constitute half or more of what some of us have remaining on this planet...

One thing is being overlooked here. Jank gets to go make head coach money for a couple of years before the clock even starts ticking on him. No accountability, no pressure. For someone who scheduled as gutless as he did and always made excuses, isn't this his dream scenario? Compared to a Keno Davis who took the Providence job for big $$ and had the pressure on him right away and was fired within two years? Jank could be terrible at SMU and still get $1 million plus for four years. Worst case scenario after that is he gets fired and ends up with Bill Self or some other high profile program as a top assistant and enough money from the SMU gig to retire comfortably.

If he stays at ISU he has HIGH pressure to make the Dance, and could be on the rocks if he doesn't. My guess is he will duck the challenge and take the cupcake for a couple of years.

I agree -- a few of the most recent Valley guys who jumped to a BCS level or took over a major conference team, did not fare so well there, but I doubt they regretted to salary they made...

I have to admit ,for that kind of money and only be an assistant, I could leave ISU in a heartbeat.

I don't see a lack of loyalty here at all, he's not taking off in the middle of a season, he's not making any drama by having this discussion swirl around him during the playoffs. He's done very well for ISU in the last few years by their standards, if they want him to be loyal, offer him the money to make him loyal. I agree with what other folks have said, this is a business, and a business decision.

Jank never had loyalty to ISU to begin with; if he did, he would look out for the best interests of the program with his schedule.

I guess my bigger question is this: why does SMU like Jank enough to make him coach-in-waiting of a Big East team?

because SMU wants Brown....and Brown wants Jank.
