Jank to SMU - "leaning toward accepting the job"

He would give up the head coaching job at ISU to become the assistant and "coach in waiting" at SMU - kinda like what Painter did leaving SIU to take the asst spot at Purdue - except SMU is not Purdue - so is this a good step or a step down?


Looks like they may also grab Jerrance Howard and Rod Strickland from Kentucky's staff

Wow, I would say it's a step down for sure. I would be very surprised if he left the Redbirds with the entire nucleus coming back for coaching in waiting spot at SMU.

That said, Larry Brown isn't going to coach for long. I get the feeling he's just there to make the transition easier. Jankovich won't have to wait long for his chance. And when he gets it, he has a BCS job. It'd be quite possibly the worst BCS job on the entire board (seriously, you couldn't hand-pick a worse BCS job than this. Team with little history, in Texas, moving to a eastern-based conference where bottom-feeders get gobbled up and spit out).

The problem: if Jank can't make the NCAAs this upcoming year with ISU, his window to move onto another BCS program may be closed. This may be best available for him.
 
They just lead SportsCenter with Larry Brown to SMU. The beat writer from Dallas said that Jank is almost certainly going to take the job. Still a shock to me but I know Jank and Brown have a relationship and SMU is moving to the Big East.
 
but SMU joins the Big East in July of 2013 so by the time Jank takes over at the helm -reportedly Larry Brown only wants to coach 2-3 years - then Jank will be BCS/Big East coach!

this is something a lot of ISU fans don't even realize in their discussion because they keep mentioning Jank's potential to jump to a BCS program - but ..
he will AUTOMATICALLY become a BIG EAST coach with this move - so I cannot see how any offer ISU could come up with could beat this deal for Jank to get away from from the little-sister directional school that he's at...
 
It is also being reported as "Official" that Jerrance Howard, along with Tim Jankovich and Rod Strickland, will join Larry Brown at SMU.

Watch for ISU assistant Rob Judson to get serious consideration for the HC job at ISU.
 
Word on the ISU campus is that there is more than one player who has loyalty to Jank and staff, not ISU...if Jud doesn't get the job, this could be a mess.
 
Would Carmichael wanna play one year in the Big East?? Maybe Nic can play 3 year there?

anyway -- not a bad gig for a guy who's one year removed from a 12 win, last place finish...and zero post season appearances in the NCAA

Football is a mess, but basketball isn't.

For basketball, they're minus West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Syracuse
Adding Southern Methodist, Houston, Central Florida....Temple and Memphis

That's still pretty close to the best basketball conference...bottom 5-6 could be a problem, and Jank could easily be a part of it, though.
 
I think this is a brilliant move for Jank.

1) He just simply wasn't going to get another BCS offer.
2) He can learn from Larry Brown and live off the name recognition he brings.
3) Jerrance Howard will deliver some good players.
4) The Big East is going to lose some serious weight at the top in the next couple years and will be much less competitive.


100) I love it because it leaves ISU scrambling late for a new coach and they haven't even been too good lately. :twisted::twisted:
 
I would be shocked too. With everyone coming back he would be silly to leave for SMU. Even with a promise for the head job in a couple years it just doesn't make sense to me. If he leaves, ISU will be making a huge mistake if they don't give the job to Rob.
 
If I'm Jank I would take it in a heart beat. There is nothing but an upside for him. Larry Brown should turn this program around and Jank can then take advantage of what is built for yet another promotion.
 
The ISU job will be highly sought after, primarily because the team is ready set for a successful year and an NCAA run. I suspect Chris Collins might get a call. However, I doubt he would take the job.
