sure...but Tom Crean graduated from Central Michigan - does it seem logical he'd leave IU and take over at CMU?

anyway -- Tom Kleinschmidt might just have had a great job at York but still wanted to step down and coach at his alma mater - who really knows...
But the point is way, way broader and you failed to even see that --
Kleinschmidt is far from the only boys basketball head coach at THE LARGE, SUCCESSFUL ELMHURST YORK program who have up and left with little or no notice - all of whom have taken arguably lesser positions.
(Recall there were those who said it's reasonable and logical that a successful upper mid-major assistant might truly want to go to a big high school HC position....but then that destroys the argument however, that after a couple years he'd turn right around and move back to LEAVE that big HS spot and take a horribly bad, low-mid-major assistant spot that would push his lifetime record in D-I of being an assistant to 97-143!)
You can use the arguments you want but Kleinschmidt going from York to Gordon Tech is not only a lateral move it is a inexplicable downward step.
Gordon Tech (394 enrollment with sparse recent success) is small and far less relevant compared to York (2625 enrollment and the best sustained success over the past 5-6 years in their history)

Kleinschmidt lands Dream job:
Article also stated at York his job was year to year with no guarantees about next year.
At Gordon Tech, he will have also have a full time teaching position vs. only being a teacher's assistant at York. And he will be making more money at his alma mater too.

good for him - but wouldn't being the head coach at YORK, one of the largest and most prominant highs schools in the midwest, also be a DREAM job for just about anyone - I recall someone who said it was a few years ago.....
Oh and btw -- my job is also my "dream job" but I have no guarantees beyond today....
BTW -- did you notice Kleinschmidt's comments in that article...he flatly states that he enjoys the ability now to RECRUIT kids to his high school team!!!
"Gordon Tech as they helped me. But it wasn't an easy decision. It wasn't about money.
"At York, you can't recruit. At Gordon Tech, I have to get out and outwork people and persuade kids to come to Gordon Tech
who have been going to Whitney Young, Lane Tech, Fenwick, Notre Dame, Loyola and St. Ignatius.
It's all about re-establishing relationships in the community.
"I can capitalize on my name. It might get me in the door. But it won't close the deal. They have to buy into what I am telling them.
I have to sell them on the person I am and how I can help their kids. I have to show up for football games.
I remember that coach Pappas came to my baseball games. He must want me, I thought to myself. I have to be visible.
I have no problem going to Welles Park or Horner Park. I used to hang out with their fathers."
One more thing - regarding the enrollment of 394 -- that is dropping precipitously of late with enrollment of over 500 as recently as 2008 & 2010...
so there have been rumors of closure continually since the 1990's....
the only things that may have saved Gordon Tech a decade ago is that nearby Archbishop Weber HS closed - boosting Gordon Tech's enrollment - and they
changed their long held policy of boys-only and started admitting girls. However as enrollments keep declining - there really are no more gimmicks...
next step is possibly closure of Gordon Tech......

It seems like a pretty easy decision.
More money
More security
Coach alma mater
York is a very good school. It's certainly not one of the largest in the Midwest. It's not even one of the Largest in the state of Illinois. There are at least 40 schools in Illinois that have larger enrollments.

there are precisely 37 high schools listed by IHSA whose enrollments are larger than 2625...
(you can't count the schools whose enrollments are SMALLER but who's classification is determined by an arbitrary multiplier)
but being 38th largest high school in Illinois is roughly equal to being about the 38th largest in the midwest as well.........
For example - the largest high school in Iowa - in DesMoines - with their enrollment of 2200 wouldn't even rank among the top 70 high schools in Illinois!
Likewise almost all midwestern states have extremely few high schools over 2500 -- thus York is, as I stated, one of the largest and most prominent HS's in the midwest...

They aren't even the biggest in the state, with 37 schools larger!
What about Indiana? Are they the midwest? There are at least 8 schools larger than York's enrollment:
Also Missouri and Michigan each has 1 larger than York:
Ohio has 2:
I guess it comes down to how you define largest. If the state of Illinois has 37 (I count 38 ) schools larger and other schools in the midwest have 10-12 schools that are larger in enrollment......that's roughly 50 schools that are larger than York.
IMO, that doesn't make them among the largest in the Midwest. Now if you are talking Morton, Lane, Curie, Warren, Waukegan, Neuqua, Stevenson, New Trier....that's a different story. Those schools have 4K plus!

Please lets stop nitpicking the choice of terms that other posters use. If you disagree, say so and let it stop there, instead of turning into a debate.
For the record, there are 777 high schools in the IHSA, and hundreds more private high schools. So if York is in the top 40 out of more than a thousand, then I think most people would agree that makes them among the largest schools. But even if you don't agree, we don't need a debate about how big is big.

Thanks appreciate all the additional facts........but they serve to strengthen the very case made...that York is aomong the BIGGEST - far bigger than any HS within even a 120 mile radius of us...
AND - there are also many small private high schools such as Peoria Academy, ICCS, Bloomington Cornerstone Academy, that don't even always get listed among those because they don't even play sports or are not even in IHSA...so all told..
Illinois has about 1000 high schools, and all the surrounding states account for only about 10 more who are bigger than 2625 - thus York is Top 50 or so out of some 4000-5000 high schools in our Central US region.
