It sounds like SIU AD Mario Mocchia is being a real jerk about this. It's not like Treg Setty did something wrong or screwed SIU. And it is not as if he is some kind of 5-star athlete whos loss really hurts SIU. He is simply doing what hundreds of kids do every year, especially after a school fires their coach. Unless they think there was tampering, which is not the case, they should just give him his full release, IMO.

While I agree with your basic statement.. Setty's reason (at leastin part) for asking for his release was to be closer to home because of an ill relative.
So closer to home should not be an issue for him - that was his goal.

Yes, I read that. But why should the AD place such a severe restriction on the kid after he did everything SIU asked him to do (raised his GPA to help SIU)? By restricting him only to schools less than 370 miles from his hometown of Maysville, Kentucky (370 miles is the distance to SIU) they are prohibiting him from considering around 90% of all D1 schools. We are real late in the process, so transfers already have a tough time with over 400 kids transferring, and most schools already filling their allowable 13 scholarships, that it could really hurt a marginal D1 player like Setty. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at a D2 school because of his limited options in D1. As I said, I simply do not see any reason short of a tampering issue (which is not the case) why a school like SIU should place any restrictions on the kid's transfer.

I get the 2.6 gpa restriction since SIU is in some hot water academically. However, since he acheived it, I would think that SIU would want to cut ties with him since they have a new coach and are starting over. Seems like a lot of effort to keep someone or prove a point with that was a role player on a bad team.

Yes, if SIU decided not to give him a release from the scholarship, they would not be allowed to use it for next year.

SIU did everything Setty asked them to do. Setty said he wanted his release to be closer to home because of a sick family member. SIU is allowing him to go closer to home. He is getting exactly what he asked for.

Just giving him his outright release should be the norm in this case. Doing anything else will only hurt SIU in the future. Whatever the real reason I'm sure recruiters will spin this multiple ways that will do more damage to SIU then just letting him go.

I understand that he said that. But why shouldn't the choice be his? Kids say they are homesick all the time when they ask for release, then go to schools farther away. Remember Danny Granger?
There is no reason why SIU should command such control over his choice? How does this restriction benefit SIU any?

I usually agree with that, but why say I'm transferring because of a sick family member or I want to be closer to home? If that's the real reason then stay close to home, if not you weren't being truthful.

You're both right. He should have just said I'm outta of here but at the same time SIU should step aside and do what's right. The EGO is a tough thing for people to let go!
