Daniels asks for release from SIU

Too bad. Just a week ago Daniels said he was "pretty sure he'll be back"-
One of their 2012 recruits, Travis Wilkins, has already asked to be released from his Letter of Intent, and I hear their other 2012 recruit, Bobo Drummond, is meeting with Barry Hinson today to discuss his intentions. I predict SIU fans will hear more bad news.
In other SIU news- Barry Hinson has decided to make "a clean break from Lowery's staff", and not retain any of the assistant coaches that worked at SIU under Chris Lowery.
Hinson hired Terrance McGee, an assistant at Div. II Grand Valley State University, as his first assistant coach Tuesday. McGee played at Missouri State under Hinson in 2001-03.

Just asking a question that I imagine a few are wondering....
Do we think there's any interest on Bobo coming back to Peoria? Not trying to say there's a "need" or a "fit" (I know very little on the guy, except that we used to talk about him more frequently...), but just curious.

As I posted above, Bobo will meet with new SIU Coach Hinson today to see what he'll do. I also happen to know that Bobo does have interest in Bradley if he does select a new school, though I am not sure the odds are real good we can get him. He has even been scrimmaging with some of Bradley's players. But the prospect of immediate playing time at a hometown school does appeal to him.

Daniels was SIU's 3rd leading scorer and 2nd leading rebounder but did way better in the conference half of the season...and led by far in FG% and blocks
.and is clearly their best returning player...and one of the best freshmen in the Valley

Just a question.....can a Valley school sign a player who just left another Valley team like Daniels.....this kid has a big upside but is it really a rule not to go after another player in conference once released or is it just "honor amongst thieves" type of thing?

Also wonder if the Braves are interested in former SIU recruit Travis Wilkins who got his release and is a 6'3 3 pt shooter @ 41%.....could come in handy ?
SIU press release on Drummond and Wilkins when they signed....

There are some conferences that have specific rules that penalize a transfer to another conference school, such as requiring he sit out 2 seasons, or banning him from accepting a scholarship at the new school.
At one time there was no added penalty by the MVC for such an intraconference transfer (Curtis Stuckey from Drake to Bradley is just one such example).
But now I do believe the MVC does have an additional penalty.
According to this listing, the MVC does not allow either a scholarship or any competetion for 2 years if the transfer plays the same sport he got a scholarship for at the previous school.

Interesting happenings...
the two incoming recruits, Bobo Drummond and Travis Wilkins both were granted their releases when they asked for them...
But - both of the current players, Dantiel Daniels, and Treg Setty, who asked for their releases, have thus far been denied...
Two Southern Illinois University men's basketball players have been granted a release from their scholarship, while two others have been denied until they meet certain requirements.
Nothing more has been said publicly - but SIU is apparently holding the releases as hostage to force Daniels and Setty to finish classes and pass - so their leaving won't hurt SIU's relatively poor track record on their APR.

In fact, that rules out about 90% or more of all D1 schools. I don't get it. This seems quite unfair to restrict the kid so severely like this. He did everything SIU asked him to do, so why is he being punished so severely for wanting to transfer?
Setty is from Maysville, Kentucky. I'd look for him to transfer to a school like Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, or another Ohio Valley school.
