  • Possession/Shot-Clock Ruling Question

    Example:

Bradley is defending Portland St and picking them up full court. The game clock and shot clock begin once the ball is inbounded. 5 seconds into Portland St's possesion, Bradley forces a loose ball. A "Scrum" ensues and the shot-clock does NOT reset in this situation. Finally, a Bradley player picks up the ball as he is heading out of bounds and tries to call time-out. According to a new rule this year, the time-out request is NOT granted. It then becomes Portland St's ball for an out-of-bounds play.

Does the shot clock get reset for Portland St?

note: The time-out request was not granted to Bradley because the new rule suggesting possession is unable to be established before and during going out of bounds.

This happened in the SIU-Arkansas game!

If the team that steals the ball (Bradley in your example) is deemed to have gained possession of the ball, then yes, the shot clock will be reset. In the SIU-Ark game, an Ark. player came up with the loose ball as he jumped out of bounds, and tried to call timeout. The ref ruled out of bounds and awarded the ball back to SIU with a new clock.

      Agreed.

But this is where I am a little confused. I thought the new rule of going out of bounds and trying to call time out... time out won't be granted if it is deemed the player did not have enough time to get possession before going out of bounds. So if they can't get possession to call a time out... then the shot clock does not reset cause possession did not change (in this example)?
