  • Bruce Weber offered SIU job

SIU isn't wasting time- they have already offered their head coaching job to Bruce Weber-

And Shaka Smart is Illinois top target-
The University of Illinois has targeted VCU's Shaka Smart as its top choice to replace Bruce Weber, according to a source familiar with the situation.

    Wow! That's not messing around.

Thanks to ESPN for being masters of the obvious.

It will be kinda' tough to avoid scheduling with Bradley if Weber becomes the SIU head coach.

You think maybe Jabari Parker will follow Coach Weber to SIU? or will he choose to be a Brave?

Yeah, assuming he takes the job, he won't be able to avoid us any longer!

Rumor has it that SIU is not offering as much to Weber as they had been paying Lowery. It will be a waiting game to see if Weber takes the job or not, but I know I would like to see him back in the Valley.

Keep in mind that if SIU offered Weber $500K, he'd be making $1.8 mil per year for the next 3 years.

Some coaches contracts / buy outs are written differently. Any salary Weber would make from SIU, the less the Illini would have to pay.

Say for example Weber signs a contract that pays him 300K per year for the next 3 years. The Illini would buyout would go from 1.3 mil a season down to 1 mil a season, since Weber was making 300K COACHING at another program.

That's why you sometimes see coaches who were bought out that get in new jobs, have really low salaries their first few seasons at their new jobs. Because they are still making really good money from their past employer.

That's also a reason you see coaches take a few years off and do other things (announcing, etc) while they are getting paid their buyouts. Annoucning isn't coaching, so double dipping is allowed. I think this is one of the reasons Keno Davis hasn't jumped back into coaching. He is making a ton from Providence.

Without exposing my "source" I will only say that I heard this from one of Bruce's friends who is a sportscaster. He believes that (after meeting and talking with Weber) that Bruce will NOT take the SIU job... I guess he could be wrong... Time will tell.

Well! If he thinks he can get another BCS job, more power to him. But if he thinks the Valley is "beneath" him, I am very sorry he feels that way.

Why would BW take the SIU job? I see no reason that he will not wait for another BCS job. I would be shocked if he takes that job. There are better mid-major jobs that may open up in the next few years. what's the rush is what I'd tell him.
