  • The mid-majors aren't done yet

Despite most mid-majors being eliminated the last two days, including the higher end mid-majors like Gonzaga, New Mexico, Creighton and VCU, it looks like the Ohio Bobcats from the MAC will survive to the Sweet Sixteen. Ohio up 58-53 with 1:09 to go over a South Florida team that many, myself included, did not think deserved to be in the tournament despite their gaudy 12-6 Big East record. Not at all taking anything away from Ohio as S. Florida is a good team, but not a great team despite being out of the Big East. And of course Ohio beat a terrific Michigan team to get to the 3rd Round as well.

Also, just moving into the second half, Lehigh up on Xavier 37-33. Xavier a high end mid-major themselves is a team that feels like a power team. Therefore, if Lehigh can pull this game out, this would be a terrific Cinderella story as they would become the first #15 seed ever to make the Sweet Sixteen!

Ohio wins 62-56! Congrats to the Bobcats who become the first MAC team to make the Sweet Sixteen since Kent State's Elite Eight run in 2002. This is also Ohio's first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1964 when there were a lot fewer teams in the NCAA Tournament.

Their reward for making the Sweet Sixteen....North Carolina! Let's see if they can do any better against them than Creighton did. Probably not, but nice to see a #13 seed make the Sweet Sixteen again.

Xavier now up on Lehigh 42-40 with about 16 minutes to go.

Of the Final 32 teams, TEN were mid-majors (VCU, Xavier, Lehigh, SLU, UNM, Murray St., Norfolk, Gonzaga, Creighton, Ohio)..and most of them lost very close games...some eliminating very high seeds..
I am still impressed that the mid-majors did well....
