  • The pursuit of Shaka begins

Now that VCU is out of the tournament, Illinois AD Mike Thomas shifts into high gear in his pursuit of Shaka Smart-

Some are now reporting that Shaka Smart is already out of the picture, and Illinois is looking at the next names on the list-

I know I'm in the minority here but I'm not as enamored with Shaka as everyone else.......

I don't believe for a minute that the pursuit of Shaka Smart didn't begin about 8 days ago. Anyway, it would clearly be the sexy hire, but not the only good choice. Personally, I'd like Scott Drew.

The more I watched those guys from Simeon & Proviso - the more I'd like to see Illinois hire SOMEONE that all the Chicago kids love and want to play for.
Just look what Donnie Boyce has done in just one year with a team that had not been relevant at the state or even Regional level for decades!
They had not been to State since 1993, but they made a bold hire and got a guy they love to play for!

I have some suggestions but I know they'd never consider...

I agree with what you are saying Tornado. Wht didn't we make a hire like that?

Search firms stay "inside the box"

A hire like what? A former player who spent some time in the pros but otherwise had no coaching experience?

I could see Donnie's next stop as a college assistant.

JUST for the record, I've seen this happen twice in my short life. A mid major coach has a couple good years, signs a long contract extension, and boom, he starts to slow down and boom! he hits a wall. Coach Les and Coach Stevens both had this, It's not a good gamble, but I don't think Shaka is something the Illini or any major should look over. Again, not an Illini fan, just giving my two cents.
... At the end, of the storm, there's a golden sky. And the sweet silver song of the lark. Walk on, through the wind, walk on, through the rain, though your dreams be tossed, and blown. Walk on, Walk on with hope in your hearts, and you'll never walk alone!
I'm behind you 100% Bradley Braves, You'll Never Walk Alone! BEAT STATE!

Which coach Stevens are you talking about?

I thought I heard somewhere that they are unable to hire those guys as head coaches. Or is that just AAU coaches?

The new rule applies to anyone who has a previous relationship with a recruit.
And they can hire them, but then they cannot recruit any kid he has had a relationship with for 2 years.
However, it only applies to hiring someone in a non-coaching position. Schools like Kansas, Kentucky, etc. used to hire former coaches, AAU guys, and relatives and place them in non-coaching positions all the time. Many of those big time programs have so much money they can keep creating jobs just to hire more people who can influence recruits, such as personal assistants to the coach, assistants to assistants, video coordinator and assistants to the video coordinators, etc.

                        Here is the rule-

Here is an article about how it has hurt some legitimate juco college coaches chances of getting and entry-level job in D1-

To me it's hard to put Les and Stevens as examples. And please this is not a knock on Les.....but Stevens had been assistant at Butler since 01-02 season moving into top spot at the start of 07....He took Butler to the NCAA tourney 4 straight years.....he only won what 21 or 22 games this year....it was only down because they didn't get in for the 5th year in a row.... Stevens would be a good get for Illinios IMO....

I was told today by someone very close to the Illinois program that they have settled on who will be their new coach and expect to announce it sometime in the next few days. They wouldn't say who it was, but said that people will be surprised and that it's not any of the people listed in recent media reports. Now lets see if he was telling me the truth...
