  • Dick Versace is interested in the Eastern Illinois job

Apparently Dick Versace wants to get back into college coaching-

The words that he chose were interesting. I sense that there might be more to this than meets the eye.

If he gets the job he'd probably hire away Willie Scott and schedule UC-Davis

Only if Willie is willing to work for $50K - $60K per year in Charleston. I think something else is up. I was interested in how Dick used the word "research".

Why? I think this is like his decision to run for office then not to run, he was a great coach but at his age I would think trying to run a college program is asking a lot.

Why? Because I liked him as a coach. And who said 72 is old?

Chico we are on a roll! I agree with you here once again! Age is a state of mind.

Dick Versace also got a few other mentions in the news recently...

When Portland fired Nate McMillan and promoted assistant Kaleb Canales to acting head coach - there were a few claims that he was the FIRST Hispanic head coach in NBA history..

Unfortunately, that is not true...he is the first Mexican head coach - but since Dick Versace's mom was Puerto Rican, Dick is the NBA's first Hispanic head coach.

Like DV or not, he gave me many memories of how great BU basketball could be. Who can ever forget the hastily arranged trip our good friend Don Draeger put together for the championship game of the 1982 NIT. Been on many road trips with Braves, but this was the greatest, and fastest, trip ever. Flew out of Peoria in the afternoon, saw the victory over Purdue, partied in the MSG neighborhood and we were back in Peoria at 3 the next morning. Not to mention Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah. Get the job Dick and show EIU fans how much fun Division 1 basketball can be.

I had zero idea he was 1/2 Puerto Rican. Thanks for the insight once again!

Dick's mom - known as Terry Rios - or more properly Tere Rios - - wrote the book that was used as the pattern for the TV series & movie "The Flying Nun"

Her story is pretty interesting -- as is the story of Dick Versace's brother Rocky

Versace to the east, Mo to the west. We could be surrounded by former Italian Bradley head coaches. And ironically they will inhabit towns whose Italian restaurants don't end with a vowel. All we're missing is Tony Barone to get the open SIU job now. But who would take Northern for the Italian directional U grand slam? Do I hear an Al Biancalana?

                              Viva Italia!
