  • More evidence just how bad the Pac-12 is this year

In one of the play-in games Wed. 3/14 12-seed South Florida dominated 12-seed Cal from start to finish. Cal trailed at halftime 33-13, and they held a 32 point lead with under 9 minutes left in the game.
USF won 65-54. The game was not as close as the final score suggests as Cal scored 17 of the final 21 points to make it look respectable. But it was a rout.

Just to remind- Cal was the 2nd place team in the Pac-12, and they finished just 1 game behind Washington. Many people were surprised to see Cal even get an at-large bid, but somehow the NCAA committee felt it was justified.

Does that mean the Bears got Californicated?
From PJ Star sports expert Kirk Wessler in his Jan. 10, 2012 column following 8th loss in a row at Drake-
"Yes, the Braves are better than they were when the season started two months ago. By a light year or two, they??™re better."

And from the PJ Star 4/26/12, Dave Reynolds-
"Fields and Grier both appear to be difference makers. If Bradley continues to add the right players around them, happy days may be ahead for the Braves after a long dry spell."

Had Cal not gotten in the NCAA tourney, they would not only have been the highest RPI team left out, but also the highest Sagarin and Pomeroy team left out. Regardless of how they did tonight, every metric out there showed Cal was one of the best 37 at-large teams. They were the only Pac-12 team anywhere close though.

But they went 3-1 in the first round in the NIT!

the NIT committee sure was nice to them -- giving them all pretty high seeds (Two #1 seeds, and two #3 seeds) and first round HOME GAMES against teams who all had to travel thousands of miles!
