  • End of the Manual-Washington game

Washington won the game last night at the Renaissance Center with Manual, but it was not without controversy. Washington won in 4 overtimes, but the controversy involves a last moment shot by Manual at the buzzer ending the 3rd overtime. It went in and appeared to give Manual the win. It was initially ruled good by one official, but then after conferring with the other refs (there is no video replay allowed in IHSA), the shot was waved off, and the teams were brought back onto the floor for the 4th overtime.

Here is the story from the PJ Star-

And here is a brief, and too high quality video clip of the final seconds of the 3rd overtime and that disputed shot by Manual-

Here is a screen shot of the final shot of the 3rd overtime, and I was able to stop it at a point that shows the Manual player did get the shot off in time and it should have counted. It is clearly out of his hands, and there is still 0.1 sec on the clock, and neither the red lights on the backboard nor the horn had gone off yet (video a bit grainy, but blame the PJS for that).-

Again, here is the link to the video, and IMO, it is clear that the horn doesn't sound until after the shot is released.
The final shot occurs between the 10 sec and 12 sec mark-

What do you think? Was Manual robbed? I think so.

When I looked at the you tube vid I thought it was still in his hand but it was so close it's really hard to tell. There were folks who said both ways AFTER watching the video...that's too close.....that's a tough job for the refs....

I thought they go by the light and not the horn? or is that only college since HS gyms don't have the lit boards.

I think that the refs got it right and the youtube video confirmed it for me. With no replay, it was probably the best decision given that the season was on the line for one of the teams.

          wrong call

look for a IHSA public apology coming soon..obvious to anyone with 20/20 that is it out of his hand..and ruled good on the floor..and then overturned. there are still photos on the web showing the ball out of his hands and still 0.01 on clock.

            I don't think it's obvious at all....

Why would they issue an apology? I mean they don't use a monitor in HS for these situations. I think I have seen 3 videos and nothing is obvious to me. I wouldn't have argued with either call...and posters on both boards after watching the video can't agree how it was.....

I have no bias on the situation as I don't follow High School basketball. But imho the youtube video shows that the ball is still in the hand of the Manual player. Without replay, I think this is asking a lot of an official to decide a game in this way with the season on the line for a team.

Just curious. Where are these images that indicate otherwise?

I honestly can't tell as I've seen about 4 different camera angles. I was able to pause the pjstar video and definitely see it was in his hand at .1 seconds left, but could never get a shot where it was in his hands with 0.0 left on the clock. That is probably the closest buzzer beater I have ever seen.

I agree...really tough to see seperation on any of the videos IMO....which also would make it tough to overturn the call that was made...

I am thinking that the pic with it out of his hands is before he tips it...just a hunch...

I was at this game. One of the craziest game I've EVER seen. Great game. As far as this buzzer beater goes, it's so close that's impossible to call. The refs made the right call, in my opinion. I don't know if the shot was off or not, but it's so close that if you award the game to Manual and then it turns out you were wrong, the refs wrongly ended Washington's season. The way it turned out, they let the play on the court decide the game. Yes, it sucks for Manual that they lost the game. Still, the refs couldn't tell if the shot was off in time or not, so they sent it to another OT.

I was at the game also and had a decent feeling that the shot was good even though I was sitting at the opposite end of the court. Watching the PJstar video just confirmed it for me. The youtube video is to blury to tell where his fingers are to the ball, so no way to tell when exactly he releases it. You can't pause it quickly per frame on youtube like you can with the pjstar video, so it's easier to see when the shot is released (at the .1 mark). Manual did have 3 other last second chances to win it so it is what it is I guess.

I also feel that the refs were pro Washington. The fouls were majority in favor of Washington the whole game until Washington had to foul. 1 play in particular, a bad pass by Washington, a Manual player was reaching down for it up the court and a Washington player dives right into the Manual player's legs and the ball rolls out of bounds. Clearly should of been a foul, I mean he literally tackled the Manual player. Might of even blew his knees out if he hit at a slightly different angle. The Manual player was shaken up but was able to walk it off. Washington was getting all the ticky tack calls while Manual pretty much had to be tackled to get a call. This probably isn't to surprising considering the crowd was about 85% Washington to 15% Manual fans. Sad turnout both nights from Manual and Central fans. Manual didn't even have a student section at the game.

ISU Coach Jank walked in behind me to the ticket window and asked the ticket seller lady if they had a special coaches pass and she told him he had to pay the $5 like the rest of the people LOL. Jank said "What the... That's ridiculous" LOL Welcome to Bradley Jank
