  • Wichita's Gregg Marshall "Publicly Reprimanded" by MVC for his post-game rant

After Wichita's loss to ISU - Head Coach Gregg Marshall went off and levelled a few choice words at officials ...
..and was seen to even be having quite a dispute with MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin...
now he has been officially reprimanded by the MVC

"Gregg Marshall..had a few choice words during Saturday’s news conference following the Shockers’ 65-64 loss to Illinois State..
Then, when he encountered Valley commissioner Doug Elgin outside the Shockers’ locker room, he had a few more.
As Marshall was heading into the locker room, Elgin told him to stop saying what he was saying..
..then went down the hallway to have a 15-minute conversation with WSU athletic director Eric Sexton and assistant AD Darron Boatright.

Marshall didn’t attack the Valley on the podium, at least not directly. But his hints weren’t subtle.

I saw some strange things today,’’ he said. “That’s your word and I’ll go with that.
It’s pretty tough to win when you see some strange things like I saw today.
“I’m looking forward to going and playing on a neutral court. I like my chances
    .’’
The insinuation there — if you can call something so obvious an insinuation — is that Marshall does not feel like
the Valley tournament provides the Shockers with a neutral court."

Then only after getting reprimanded, Marshall issues an apology

BUT -- I have to think that somewhere in Gregg Marshall's mind he's thinking...
"you know what - I don't really give a *** about them and the way we've
been treated by the refs the past few years - because I am already getting
calls and a whole lot more are going be coming my way after some of the BCS
coaching jobs open up and I am outta here...**** with 'em"

•Hi Jim, I read some of Greg Marshalls post game comments and it appears he was blaming the refs for the loss. Did you get that same feeling in the media room? If so, i think its ridiculous. There was a pretty bad missed call on Tyler Brown towards the end of the game. Refs were letting them play and that went both ways

•Without a doubt. He also bullied his way into the press conference first when ISU was supposed to go first as the winning team. He told MVC officials he was ready to go. When they told him he had to wait, he dropped several f-bombs. So they let him go. Ridiculous. Did he not think Jankovich and ISU didn't have any complaints about some of the calls? Let me tell you, no one in the press room was crying any tears to see Marshall drive down the road home to Wichita on Saturday night.

Marshall is a great coach who wins. Not a fan of his antics though. He is the kind of guy that you would love as your coach, but hate him when he's going up against your team. Sort of like Rodman was as a player.

Lefty, I spent all my money on the Wichita game. Couldn't find a way to help out ISU vs. the Jays, so they were on their own.

hmmmm...should have passed the hat...the rest of the conference would have kicked in........

I agree on Marshall....he seems slimey to me.....maybe that's a bad word...I like McDermott better as a person but I get the feeling Marshall is a better coach all the way around

Let me state that I do not like Gregg Marshall. However, he's one helluva coach. What you all may not know is that Marshall was personally approached by Elgin and was begged to apply for the Wichita job; he and Elgin are buds and Elgin helped to make him a very rich man. For all of the criticism of Elgin let there be no doubt that he truly looks out for his marquee MVC teams.

So who did Elgin go to and try to persuade to take and/or apply for the BU position last year?

There was a supposed quote posted on the MVCfans board right after the game saying that the Valley "got their wish for three teams in the tournament" by "allowing" Illinois St. to win. I don't know if he actually said that, and therefore I did not post anything at that time. Either he did say it, or maybe that was an interpretation by this poster just by reading between the lines. Either way, it seems like Marshall has rapidly become the coach that everyone else in the Valley hates.

No doubt he's a great coach. But he seems like he needs a few classes in ettiquette.

a couple other comments reportedly made and cited via twitter from people who were there include

-"The Valley gets what they want-us not playing in the championship"

-When asked if their NCAA seeding took a hit..
"I'm not worried. Are you worried? You shouldn't be. Sleep well tonight."

-When asked if anything needed to be fixed to make a run in the NCAA..
                          "I don't think we're going to do too much fixing. We're 27-5."

-One guy after the win over Indiana State said Illinois was going to be calling

-One reporter said "nine MVC coaches are class guys, then there's GM"

                          - "it only takes an 8th grade education needed to become MVC referee!"

Sorry I agree with GM when it comes to the reffs in the MVC. I blame Elgin because the it is his overall responsibility to put the best product possible on the floor. The way some of these reffs call a game in Valley is so different they would call in a Big Ten game. The reffs when they call a Valley game believe they are too good for it or they want to be part of the show. Elgin needs to step up and do his job!
