Jim Larranaga - now the coach at Miami - but a long time mid-major guy who took his team far into the NCAA tourney in the past...
So you think he'd stand up for legitimately good mid-major teams, right?
No...now he's trashing the midmajors and being dishonest-
"Miami's Larranaga again strays from truth about mid-majors' NCAA tournament credentials"
Miami coach Jim Larranaga was at it again Monday, claiming that this is a down season for “mid-majors.”
And once again he cited inaccurate numbers to support his lame case for more “high majors” in the NCAA tournament.
First, as I mentioned last week when Larranaga first went on this tangent, the mid-majors are doing just fine this season,
thank you very much.
This morning’s Rating Percentage Index, as posted at CollegeRPI.com, shows 14 teams from outside the six major conferences among the top 40.
That’s 35 percent, for those scoring at home.
George Mason Patriots They are: No. 11 Wichita State, No. 12 UNLV, No. 13 Southern Mississippi, No. 15 Temple,
No. 20 Memphis, No. 22 Gonzaga, No. 24 Creighton, No. 27 Colorado State, No. 28 San Diego State, No. 29 Murray State,
No. 31 Saint Mary’s, No. 33 New Mexico, No. 34 Long Beach State, No. 35 St. Louis, No. 37 Harvard and No. 40 Iona.
All are comfortably ahead of No. 49 Miami, for which, of course, Larranaga is lobbying anyone who might listen.
But that didn’t prevent Larranaga from saying: “If you look at the non-conference performance, the non-conference strength of schedules,
the high majors have done extremely well this year. Whereas the mid-majors have fallen off a little bit
with their performance in the non-conference schedule.”
That would be news to Long Beach State, Wichita State, Temple, Southern Miss, Gonzaga, Xavier, Iona and Murray State,
all of which have non-conference schedules ranked in the top 45. Miami’s is No. 110, and the Hurricanes’ most notable
non-ACC victory is over No. 81 Massachusetts.
Larranaga again strayed from fact when referencing his tenure at George Mason,
where his Patriots received at-large NCAA bids in 2006 and ’11.
...But Larranaga is dead wrong with his “I think there’s only been one team to ever get an at-large bid in the 60s.”
Heck, two such teams made the field last season: No. 64 Marquette and No. 67 Southern California.
....he ought to state the truth.
