Names being mentioned as possible next Illinois coaches

That means there will be pressure on the new AD Mike Thomas to make his decision on a new basketball coach primarily based on skin color...

wait - let me get this straight -- Black Board of Trustee members are trying to hijack the legitimate debate of who should be hired and make it a racial issue to force the hiring of a Black candidate regardless of who appears to be the best candidate in the minds of the majority of Board members??

I have never heard of such a thing - and surely if it were happening then the PJStar ought to help right the wrong and get on board supporting the minority candidate(s) as they have done when this same thing occurred in the past.

oddly all the articles I have seen are saying that whoever the new coach is - should keep Jerrance Howard on the staff..
but nobody seems to be giving any credence to the idea that Jerrance should be given a shot at the head coaching job --

Seems like the majority of the IlliniNation feel that their AD will only hire someone with head coaching experience. I personally think that JH would be a good hire. He's been around the coaching ranks for 10 years now, has great recruiting contacts, and is well liked by most of his players and colleagues. There's no guarantee that hiring Shaka Smart or Brad Stevens will elevate this program.

There is plenty of talk that this could be Bruce Weber's last season at Illinois. I have heard that Weber is said to be agreeable to a buyout, so there seems to be a good chance that will happen is new AD Mike Thomas can come up with the $3.9 million needed.
Here are a couple names mentioned by Illinois insiders-
Frank Martin of Kansas State who just upset #3 ranked Missouri at Missouri tonight, and Gregg Marshall. Anyone else have some thoughts?

I don't know if its been talked about on here but I've heard of a rumor involving the 3.9 million left on Weber's contract. Again, this is rumor but that is what blogs are for in the first place. Apparently there are a number of Illini alum that are offering to "donate" a large amount (3.9 million) to Illinois. Obviously this is stating there are a number of fans offering to buy out the rest of Webers contract in order to get a new head coach.

I don't know the rules from ncaa about hiring or firing but if this could be traced, it would seem to me that this would have to be a violation. Now granted the fans could simply donate this to the school and its up to Illinois how to disperse the money but it seems this would have to be a violation.

I do not believe the NCAA has any rules regarding how schools pay their coaches, how much they pay them, or where the money comes from. So I do not believe there can be any NCAA improprieties or violations no matter how they handle Weber's contract.

I have very little to base this on other than a general impression, but FM looks like a guy who could cause those who oppose him to sleep with the fishes. I could see him doing "what it takes" to get the top kids out of Chicago. And in 4 years it could be like a post Sampson Indiana. He'd be hilarious alright.

Illini fans, believing they have a clean program... nothing as dirty as anyone else in the B10 (well besides NW'rn).

Illini having BAM - touted as such a GREAT coach in his first couple years. Touted as running a clean program and doing nothing but winning (his first couple of years).

Then BAM couldn't recruit. Then he began recruiting and getting the "top talent". Now BAM can't coach. Heck - he isn't even a good recruiter (JH is the recruiter).

Get BAM out. Frank Martin in. Perfect. A guy from the same mold as Bobby Huggins. And everyone surely knows the history of Bobby Thuggins.

So yea - Frank Martin would be PERFECT for UIUC. Time for them to start cheating with the Big Boys and getting players, not students.

Agreed. The athletic department budget is its own entity, completely separate from that of the university.
