Drake & UNI reamed by other instate schools, Iowa State & U of Iowa -

I'm ashamed to be an Iowa State Grad....No more alumni money from me.
This is a cherished tradition that is being pitched for MONEY....
Every kid in Iowa who can't play for ISU/Iowa considers Drake/UNI for a chance to play against the Hawks/Cyclones...
Sad day for the high school athletes in Iowa...BUilding for the Future

I thought that the State of Iowa government was involved in these schools playing each other every year. Wasn't it a state mandate or something like that.
Maybe I am wrong be I seem to remember some of my Iowa friends telling me years ago that they had to play each other. They also told me that Iowa made the ruling many years ago to never play Bradley in any sport during the regular season because we had the nickname "Braves". More of that political correctness crap sweeping the country.

Being a Drake season ticket holder this really angers me. Having either Iowa or Iowa St. come to the Knapp each year was usually the only game that approached a sell-out sans the 2007-2008 season when we had many sell-outs. I am guessing my season ticket cost won't go down next year and in fact it will probably go up to try to offset the revenue Drake loses by nearly filling the place once a year and charging extra for that game. I think Drake would charge $25 for a single ticket to the Iowa or Iowa St. game while the normal price for other games is much less. Not to mention that fans will have to shell out extra money to go to the game(s) at Wells Fargo Arena.
I really hope the Valley can work on starting another conference challenge with either the CAA, A-10 or WCC like we did with the MWC. I am guessing that challenge will not continue with all of the changes going on there.

They are obviously worried about all the losses their teams have gotten playing at those two opponents' places..
...... I have lost respect for them...

Once again, just a colossal miscalculation on the behalf of the administration of these two schools, all in the name of the almighty dollar!

Originally posted by Da Coach View PostThis is a common misconception. There was talk by a state legislator of making it a law, but it was never put into legislation. The schools have just agreed voluntarily to continue their non-conference scheduling of each other, but everyone knew it would probably end one day.

Frankly, I think the government has better things to do than legislate who plays who in college basketball. So I am glad that these weren't laws that dictated who played who, though I'm sure many fans will miss the four Iowa teams playing each other due to the sour attitude of the Iowa St. and Iowa athletic departments.

Iowa & Iowa State don't want to play Drake or UNI unless it's a neutral site even - and even then - they may be faking interest in that as they seem to be dragging feet.....

the decision is final - the big boys, Iowa State & Iowa, no longer will play at Drake or UNI -
and will no longer play BOTH mid-major instate schools - just one each year...
they will meet at a neutral site but I'll bet this only happened because UNI & Drake made even further concessions...
And note the rather negative comments by the UNI & Drake AD's compared
to the positive comments from the Iowa & Iowa State guys...
"Iowa and Iowa State will continue their home-and-home series, but the
Big Four Classic will replace home-and-home deals Iowa and Iowa State had
with Drake and Northern Iowa."
"An event like this has been talked about for years,” said Iowa athletic
director Gary Barta, who spearheaded the event. “I’m excited for our
teams and I’m excited for our fans. The event is going to be a great
celebration of college basketball in the state of Iowa. The spirit of
partnership between the four schools has been tremendous. A lot of hard
work, cooperation and give-and-take have gone into making this happen.”
Jamie Pollard, Iowa State’s athletic director, said his school looks
forward to participating in the event.
“Our state has a rich basketball history,” Pollard said. “The opportunity to
create a single showcase in our state’s capital city has been discussed for
years and we are very excited to finally see this happen.”
Athletic directors Troy Dannen of Northern Iowa and Sandy Hatfield Clubb of
Drake both said they’d prefer to continue home-and-home agreements with
Iowa and Iowa State.
“My job is to protect the interests of Northern Iowa and Northern Iowa
basketball,” Dannen said. “And while I am powerless to demand the series
continue, this option is certainly the next-best option for us.”
Said Hatfield Clubb: “This is our only alternative...."
... we realize that both Drake and Northern Iowa would probably prefer to
keep games on their home courts...
“This is not in UNI’s best interests, and coach (Ben) Jacobson and I share the same feeling that home-and-home is in everyone’s best interests,” Dannen said. “But we both recognize the reality that this is the best alternative.”

not only did they choose to to schedule the Chippewas of Central Michigan for what seems like an easy early-season football victory -
- but they were embarrassed and lost to the Chippewas 32-31
but they also play the Chippewas in hockey and other sports as well.....
So - what's with the hypocrisy - they won't play the Braves because of the nickname - but they don't have a problem with the Chips??
This story details how schizophrenic the NCAA and schools' decisions are in regard to Indian nicknames...
they really pick and choose who they ask and who they get "permission" or approval from since all Indian tribes have several different branches
and communities and they are by NO MEANS in agreement - so what the schools do is hand-pick ONE tribe - seal a deal (usually for some $$ from logo licensing and apparel sale) and then call it settled.
What a scam and what an insult to the tribes who are not being consulted or allowed in to this decision making!
In the end - it proves how arbitrary, greedy, and mercenary this whole process really is.......

Um, didn't Iowa play the Braves in women's basketball the last couple of years? And I think they played the men at South Padre a few years ago. They also played a home-and-home series with BU in baseball this past season.
