  • High School girls basketball team gets technical for pink uniform

Girls basketball team from Omaha, Neb., receives technical foul for wearing pink jerseys as the home team, which violated a state rule.

They were going along with the widespread pink "awareness" campaign thing but failed to realize that the STATE high school rules require HOME TEAMS must wear white...
When the opposing coach asked the refs about the rule, the home team was winning by one point and the refs imposed a technical foul - the visiting team then ended up rallying while the penalized home team floundered and lost 62-47.

The article claims the opponents used "terrible sportsmanship" but in reality they played by the rules and used the rule to their advantage. Isn't this just the home team's stupidity and ignorance of the rules that are on the books?
This same, exact violation a couple years ago in Illinois cost Chicago North Lawndale HS a State Championship but I don't recall anyone feeling sorry for them or saying it was bad sportsmanship to enforce their rule/uniform violation.

Your right no one felt sorry for North Lawndale but it wasn't exactly the same rule violation. It was a uniform violation and it was because the piping dimensions on their shirts exceded what the rule book allowed and they were penilized. Now before we feel sorry for such a stupid rule,it must be said they were told the Thur night before the Tourney that if they didn't send someone to get their legal uniforms back home they would start the games with a "T". Which the officials did both FRI and Sat. They had a chance to correct this stupid rule but chose not to and it did cost them a State Championship.

They should have called it prior to tip off. I can relate this to golf, in match play - a golfer knew of a violation but did not call it until he was down and uses the info to assist in winning.

Never call this violation during the game. I guess that was the case since "home team was winning by one."

Wily will get a kick out of this where the refs overstepped their bounds and badly mistook and misunderstood a technical rule......

Once when my kid was playing in junior high (8th grade team) - we played at Eureka Middle School...and the team manager entered all the players' into the official scorebook - and put all the numbers in first then added the names one by one but had all the names staggered by one spot so every single kid in the scorebook had an INCORRECT uniform number next to his name...

Still - I am sure nobody on either team would have known or bothered but the "Official Scorekeeper" - who was of course an assistant of the 7th grade team - was keeping the official book and tipped off the refs.
(it is a violaiton that should only be penalized if the coach requests it)

The refs then began the game by allowing Eureka to shoot TWO technical FREE THROWS for every incorrect number - roughly 20-some FT's to start the game!

The refs OBVIOUSLY erred and many in the crowd, including myself, knew that they had erred and were requesting they check the rule book on this one.
In the end those extra 14 point that made the score 14-0 even before the tipoff to start the game, remained on the scoreboard - even tho the rule allows only A MAXIMUM of TWO free throws for that violation - ONLY TWO - not 2 for each player.

Had the refs at that North Lawndale game made the same stupid mistake and allowed technical FT's for every player wearing the improper uniform, then Champaign Centennial would have gotten 18 FT's (btw - it was Rayvonte Rice who shot those FT's)

Yes, the refs in your situation were in error. Since your situation was a middle school game ,you probably had officials that had not been working very long. Two free throws should have been the penalty and the book corrected to reflect the proper numbers for each kid.
