A new high school being built in Draper, Utah, about halfway between Salt Lake City and Provo, will open in 2013. The school board there decided to let the future students vote and decide on the mascot and colors.
The families of future students of the new district were mailed ballots to vote for the colors and mascot. By a large margin, they voted for the mascot name The Cougars, and the colors blue and silver.
However, in an unbelieveable move, the school board has decided to reject the name Cougars because they are concerned it might offend middle-aged women! No joke!. They decided on the name Chargers, though Chargers was not even among the choices on the ballot!
For the record, Draper, Utah is about 25 miles up I-15 from Provo, the home of the Brigham Young University who are also known as the Cougars. And Draper is heavily populated with Mormons and fans of BYU. Also, Cougars is the most common high school nickname in the country!
