  • Political correctness taken to an extreme

A new high school being built in Draper, Utah, about halfway between Salt Lake City and Provo, will open in 2013. The school board there decided to let the future students vote and decide on the mascot and colors.
The families of future students of the new district were mailed ballots to vote for the colors and mascot. By a large margin, they voted for the mascot name The Cougars, and the colors blue and silver.
However, in an unbelieveable move, the school board has decided to reject the name Cougars because they are concerned it might offend middle-aged women! No joke!. They decided on the name Chargers, though Chargers was not even among the choices on the ballot!
For the record, Draper, Utah is about 25 miles up I-15 from Provo, the home of the Brigham Young University who are also known as the Cougars. And Draper is heavily populated with Mormons and fans of BYU. Also, Cougars is the most common high school nickname in the country!

Here is a Forbes article that compares this Cougar controversy with the Pekin Chinks controversy from the 1980's -
The sensitivities toward team nicknames change with the times, as monikers once given without much thought suddenly become controversial and unsettling. Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Here is a funnny story about a school kid who refused to go along with her teacher- it's a kindergarten kid who refused to color a picture of the Kansas Jayhawk- because she was a Kansas State fan-
Frank Martin has to appreciate Emma Burton. She not only is a Kansas State fan, but she’s cut from the coach’s same fiery cloth. The kindergartner recently refused to color a Kansas Jayhawk during class, explaining that she and her family were K-State fans.

          Draper

DC funny article about Draper Utah. But don't put too much stock about anything coming out of there. It is kind of an odd Interstate15 bedroom community for Provo and SLC. The major employer in town is the Utah State Prison system. They may just be outsiders or U of U or USU alums looking to be a pain in the rump to the BYU-Provo types....
