  • Ugly score of the day

It seems awfully late in the season for D1 teams to be playing cupcake, non-D1 opponents. But here was the result of one of those matchups tonight. Former Bradley opponent Western Carolina, who is 9-10 and 3-3 in the Southern League, rolled over Toccoa Falls 141-39!

It might have been worse than the 102 point margin, but Western Carolina played it's deepest reserves and walkons more minutes than their starters. WCU had 9 players in double figures, and 2 more had 9 points. Every player on the WCU team scored at least 7 points, and WCU outrebounded Toccoa Falls 62-16! Turnovers were 27-5, and steals were 20-2.

Toccoa Falls College is a tiny (750 enrollment) Christian college in Toccoa Falls, Georgia, formerly known as Northeast Georgia Christian College. They are not an NCAA school, but a member of the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association).

Yikes! What possessed Toccoa Falls to even play this team?

And why would W. Carolina schedule a meaningless game like this so far into the season?

For whatever reason, the SoCon schedule has WCU a full week off between games. Probably sounds like their choice was to eat the bye week or play a non-D1 as a sked filler. So instead of being idle for 7 days, they chose to play today.

It also makes sense because virtually every team in the country is already in their conference schedule so you can't find anyone. Except the indies who kill RPIs.

So in conclusion, it's actually completely defensible, and if I'm WCU, I'm asking what the heck the SoCon is thinking.

Toccoa Falls had a kid from Dunlap the past several seasons - Jon Rychener - but each season Toccoa Falls does schedule and get hammered
by one or two D-I's and take their lumps for the payoff it provides.........

meanwhile Western Carolina outrebounded Toccoa Falls 58-16 and shot the ball 35 times more...
The FT discrepancy was hard to believe as well - as WCU shot 37 FT's to just 6 for TFC
