  • 4G now available in Peoria

Has anyone else who has Verizon wireless noticed this morning Verizon appears to have activated 4G data transmission. Most other major cities and metropolital areas have had 4G for a year or more. I just noticed it this morning on my phone, but anyone connecting via Verizon with a phone, iPad, or other data device will notice the faster speeds of 10 times or more. Browsing the internet is now about as fast as broadband connections in your home. Nice! It's about time!

I'm still seeing 3G on my iPhone.

    Hmmm....

I heard it was still a ways off. That's neat

I wonder if a 4G broadcast will show any effects or regular 3G phones... like give them a minor boost

They must be testing it out on a limited basis. As I drive around, I get the 4G in only 1 area, and 3G everywhere else.

Heard from a good friend that VZ activated 4g last night.
          Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

            This is correct.

HOWEVER - 4G is like a funnel for your phone's battery juice. On 3G, my phone usually gets through the day using about 3/4 of it's battery life...but on day's when I am somewhere such as Chicago where I can receive 4G, it is dead by about 5pm with moderate internet usage.

4G is faster, especially for any applications that utilize streaming audio or video, but it is obnoxious how quickly your battery dies.

It may just be as simple as closing applications you aren't using. Why keep your internet browser on if you aren't using? Make sure you completely close it out when not in use otherwise it's going to drain your battery.

I thought all iPhones only had 3G chips. I think Apple decided current 4g chips drained batteries too quickly.

I guess you could get a mobile 4g hotspot ans use your iPhones wi-fi..

I do...it's a known issue that 4G is a battery drain. Maybe the next-gen smartphones will figure this out.

Just one of the reasons I am holding out for iPhone 5.

Waiting on technology is a dangerous game. I just get the best at the time and move on. Something better will always be out in a month or two.

I saw the 4G change-over last night. 4G is crazy fast.
I can do all things through pasta, which strengthens me.

What are you talking about? Duke Nukem Forever finally came out and totally lived up to the hyp....................nevermind.
Well let me just quote the late-great Colonel Sanders, who said..."I'm too drunk to taste this chicken."

I've found that turning off all the satellite locating and GPS options can significantly extend battery life. When on, the phone is constantly communicating with the satellite which is a big drain on the battery. If you aren't using your Navigation or GPS, turn them off (but remember to turn back on if you need them). On Droid phones go to Settings, then Location & Security, and switch off the locating options.

i usually turn down the screen brightness when i know i am going to be without a charger for awhile.... after awhile i don't even notice the difference at like 60 percent brightness

hopefully apple figures out the battery life by the time iphone 5 comes out.

While this is true that it extends battery life, you are also taking a gamble doing this in public if your phone is lost or stolen. You won't be able to track it online with the GPS options off. Probably good to turn it off at home but should leave it on in public.
