We all know that both Creighton and Wichita State have all but cemented an at-large bid for either if the other one wins the MVC Tourney...
and even if some third team wins (Bradley, maybe?) I am thinking both Creighton & Wichita are also in, giving the Valley THREE teams under that scenario....
BUT should either the Bluejays or Shockers win the MVC Tourney - are any other teams deserving of at-large bids??
Right now six teams (Drake, ISU, InSU, Evansville, BU, and SIU) all have such bad records and/or bad RPI's or bad SOS's that they are out of the question.
This is sad for ISU since their overall record is 11-6 and a good stretch run could give them 20+ wins overall.
That leaves ONLY UNI and Missouri State as even hopeful that they'd be able to position themselves for an at-large bid...and both need to turn things around
really fast and go on a tremendous winning streak if they still have hope.....
Here are the specifics on each..
UNI - their RPI drops to 30 and their SOS is 9...at 12-6 (the win over tiny Loras College won't count) and only 3-4 in the conference, they would be on the bubble for a 3rd team in a mid-major conference - but a 2-4 road record and no real elite quality wins will make it easy for the NCAA selection committee to exclude them...as often seems what the selection committee likes to do to Valley teams with RPI's under 50...
They are under the gun to win at least 8 or 9 of their remaining 11 conference games and play pretty deep into the Valley Tourney.
Personally - I think with the team they have - and when others see last night's tape and realize how badly they played against a zone, they are in trouble with their at-large chances.
Missouri State - The Bears drop to 10-8 (they also have a useless win over a softie D-II Emporia State) only a game from .500, and 4-3 in the MVC....
current RPI drops to 79 with a VERY bad home loss last night to Evansville...and SOS drops to 40...
They now have two bad home losses (UE & ISU) as well ...........so that one single quality win - the win at Creighton - is looking more and more
like having one single life preserver for the entire Carnival Costa Concordia cruise ship...
Thus overall - I think there's ever so little hope any more of anything more than two bids for the Valley -- with the only possibility of three being if both Creighton and Wichita fail to win the conference tourney and then they'd both likely get at-large bids barring a collapse of either or a season ending injury to Doug McDermott.
