  • MVC At-large bid possibilities

We all know that both Creighton and Wichita State have all but cemented an at-large bid for either if the other one wins the MVC Tourney...
and even if some third team wins (Bradley, maybe?) I am thinking both Creighton & Wichita are also in, giving the Valley THREE teams under that scenario....

BUT should either the Bluejays or Shockers win the MVC Tourney - are any other teams deserving of at-large bids??

Right now six teams (Drake, ISU, InSU, Evansville, BU, and SIU) all have such bad records and/or bad RPI's or bad SOS's that they are out of the question.
This is sad for ISU since their overall record is 11-6 and a good stretch run could give them 20+ wins overall.

That leaves ONLY UNI and Missouri State as even hopeful that they'd be able to position themselves for an at-large bid...and both need to turn things around
really fast and go on a tremendous winning streak if they still have hope.....

Here are the specifics on each..

UNI - their RPI drops to 30 and their SOS is 9...at 12-6 (the win over tiny Loras College won't count) and only 3-4 in the conference, they would be on the bubble for a 3rd team in a mid-major conference - but a 2-4 road record and no real elite quality wins will make it easy for the NCAA selection committee to exclude them...as often seems what the selection committee likes to do to Valley teams with RPI's under 50...
They are under the gun to win at least 8 or 9 of their remaining 11 conference games and play pretty deep into the Valley Tourney.
Personally - I think with the team they have - and when others see last night's tape and realize how badly they played against a zone, they are in trouble with their at-large chances.

Missouri State - The Bears drop to 10-8 (they also have a useless win over a softie D-II Emporia State) only a game from .500, and 4-3 in the MVC....
current RPI drops to 79 with a VERY bad home loss last night to Evansville...and SOS drops to 40...
They now have two bad home losses (UE & ISU) as well ...........so that one single quality win - the win at Creighton - is looking more and more
like having one single life preserver for the entire Carnival Costa Concordia cruise ship...

Thus overall - I think there's ever so little hope any more of anything more than two bids for the Valley -- with the only possibility of three being if both Creighton and Wichita fail to win the conference tourney and then they'd both likely get at-large bids barring a collapse of either or a season ending injury to Doug McDermott.

I have to agree tornado. But after four straight one bid seasons, I will gladly take two bids this year. Hopefully WSU and CU win out (outside of their remaining head-to-head game, and CU's loss to us! ). But if they otherwise both take care of business, there's no way they both don't go to the NCAA Tournament.

Its bad to say this but UNI's loss to Bradley probably knocked them out of the possibility of getting a bid.

I think Creighton will end up winning the Tournament. Wichita will receive a bid and if Missouri can get a good conference record then I can see them possibly getting an invite but don't hold your breath.

Best possible scenario would be Creighton, Wichita, and Missouri receiving bids and another winning the tourny.

Most probable IMO Creighton and Wichita are the only teams going to the tournament with Missouri and UNI going to NIT.
Well let me just quote the late-great Colonel Sanders, who said..."I'm too drunk to taste this chicken."

This is a pretty cut-and-dry situation for the MVC barring something funky happening. Send CU and WSU to the tourney and everyone else misses.

The NIT battle though is still to be decided. The middle of the conference is a mess right now. Whoever emerges goes to the NIT, really, with MSU and UNI having a 10-foot head start with their RPI/SoS numbers.

The MVC could get 3, if neither Wichita and Creighton wins in St. Louis. Otherwise, I think only 2 MVC get in. That being said, I'm glad to get multiple teams in the NCAA.

TAS, does this mean Bradley can buy their way into the CBI with an 8-24 record?

-- we are 6-13 - and a run all the way to the title game of the Valley Tourney means we could still get to 20-13 ..
That may sound slightly optimistic but I'm all for it...and I bet the players would love to see it happen..

That would be amazing if we could do that! That would be THE Cinderella story of the year in college basketball if that happened.

Right now, based on yesterday's win, I think double digit wins is doable.
