  • McDermott = NBA ?

Just a discussion -- does he have an NBA future??
    Here are some thoughts...

He's the best player out of the Valley in a lot of years - maybe since Kyle Korver...

BUT -- is there a chance that a 6-7 or 6-8 white guy that plays below the rim is ever gonna play post in the NBA?
Will he have to morph himself into more of a Kyle Korver-like player and develop better ballhandling and consistency in making 3-pointers on the move?
In the NBA, he's not likely to get the kind of shots under the basket that currently account for 50-75% of his scoring.

Remember - players such as Adam Morrison, Gordon Hayward, JJ Redick, Joe Alexander, Morris Almond, Luke Babbitt, and others - all were great scorers in college & some were labelled the next Larry Bird and have struggled in the NBA...

Also - where Meyers Leonard is nowhere near as accomplished of a scorer - yet everyone has Leonard in the Top 10 of the next mock draft....McDermott is not in anyone's mock I say he stays four years and haunts us as much as he can...

I think he will play in the league. Probably not early entry. Not a starter in the NBA. But will play some. I will probably be haunted by that statement as he becomes an all star. Best in a while though from the Valley.

He brings a ton of intangibles to the game but before he heads to the NBA he'll have to beef up and improve on his quickness. The NBA is a complete other level and he'll need to play a 3-4 position where he's either right now to slow or not big enough to stop an NBA top flight player. Offensively the kid has what it takes. He can shoot, play with back to the basket and has a nose for the ball. I'm betting he'll be the type of player that will step out and hit 3's,extend Ds, and grab a ton of weak-side rebounds which will translate to 10-12 pts a game 4-5 rebounds.

I think he'll probably stay for 4 years, unless he goes off for 40+, like he did against us, in the NCAA tournament. I see him as a Tyler Hansbrough type player at the next level, except he can shoot better than Hansbrough. I do think, if he keeps up his current level of play for the rest of this year, and two more years (if he doesn't leave early), it will be almost impossible for every NBA team to pass on him in favor of 60 other players.

So you think he plays the same game as Tyler Hansbrough?
Even if so - lots of people doubted Hansbrough could play either low post nor wing in the NBA -- but his sheer physical strength and power has partly proved doubters wrong...
BUT -- you will find very few people who think McDermott can ever be the power forward type of player Hansbrough is...

I was talking the McD-Korver comparison the other day...as a college player I like McD much better because of versatility...he can score inside and out with consistency.....I think he will say all 4 years....

As far as the NBA goes....Korver has more range and is one dimensional which works for him.......McD doesn't have the physicality(now) to be effective inside and will need to improve range from the inside......

He's a smart kid and seems to be a hard worker...so in a couple of years he may rank right up with the all time Valley greats and have a good NBA career

I haven't seen McD play, but in a few games in his career.
Just watching his performance on Sat. night, he has one of the quickest releases I've ever seen down low in college hoops. He can score from anywhere on the court, and remember he is just a sophomore. Hard to believe, but he has not yet reached his potential. Don't know if he'll be a prototypical NBA post-player, but his ability to score from anywhere on the court makes me think he can be utilized on an NBA roster.
And I doubt if he gets double-teamed either, and he appears to be a very good one-on-one player around the basket no matter his athletic deficiencies.

I do not see any way, regardless of how physical he might become, that McDermott will ever be able to play "inside" at the NBA level, and probably likewise at any pro level.

If you watch this YouTube video of his scoring from Saturday night against Bradley, most baskets come from under the basket or in the paint-
Creighton University's Doug McDermott scores a career high 44 points against Bradley University on Saturday, January 7, 2012. Doug was 18-23 from the field.

He'll need to change his game quite a bit, because he will get very few of those baskets at the next level.

yeah...I didn't mean to imply that he could be that versatile in the NBA....only college.....I think he's a better overall player at the college level than Korver....but unless he improves his range Kyle will have the better NBA career...at this point anyway.....I guess it depends how much McD improves the next two years.

He has already shown that he can adapt and change in just his 1 1/2 seasons. He's turned into a better rebounder and inside player than Echenique or Kenny Lawson were, and he's become the best 3-point shooter on a team loaded with good 3-point shooters.

Everything I have heard about the kid is that he is a hard worker. Just because he is white I would never compare him to Tyler Hansbourough. Tyler is an energy guy in the mold of The Worm. These guys just out work out hustle everyone. Doug does play hard and does not take plays off but is not that type of player. He has much better offensive skills then those two but physically speaking he has a ton of work to do but will probably do what is necessary to play in the NBA. One thing NBA scouts will like about him is that he always seemed to be around the ball instinctively. Good players find a way to get the ball at the right time and also make players around you better. He does that and than some.

I say he stays for four years as well and tries to make as many NCAA Tourney's and Valley championships as possible. This is his "NBA".

I agree with this. Our seats are close to CU's basket for the second half. He made many easy baskets that would NEVER happen in the NBA. I thought he was a man among boys Saturday.... but would be a boy among men in the NBA.

And I agree with that.....He shoots a great percentage from 3 but they weren't long range 3's......he'll have to improve his range to score in the NBA.....

McDermott looks like he'll be the classic tweener in the NBA, too slow to play a guard and too short to be a front court player. His offensive game does remind a little bit of Larry Bird. I think he'll be an excellent European League player. Not looking forward to seeing him in a Creighton uniform against us the next 2 1/2 years. Will look forward to watching him play against the other Valley teams.
