  • Coach Mo

the other Coach Mo thread got lost when the board server changeover occurred...

BUT again last night Coach Mo and his WIU Leathernecks got a nice win...
this time they knocked off Oakland on the road to go to 8-5 and 3-2 in the Summit...
They took the lead in the first 2 minutes of the game and never trailed thereafter...leading comfortably by double digits much of the final 5 minutes...

They have now already exceeded their win total and conference win total of the entirety of last season

I will always think very highly of Coach Mo - not just for his on-the-court performance, but his life-teaching skills.
He'd be one of the Top 3 people I'd like to meet in person someday...and also a Wesleyan alum!

Coach Mo's successes keep coming -- WIU won again over IPFW running their winning streak to 3 in a row and 5 of their last 6 --
They are 4-2 in the league and 9-5 overall -
            (WIU's BEST start since 1997!!!)

Plus of their 5 losses - 2 were by one point - one shouldn't have been a loss at all as a basket was allowed that should have been waived off, and two more losses were by just 2 possessions (one was a 4-pt loss at Michigan)...only one loss was (at Dayton) was by double digits when WIU was without their star PG Ceola Clark

They NOW are one of ONLY TWO Summit League teams (ORU) whose RPI and whose SOS are both inside the top four of the conference...

Plus WIU is ranked inside the Top 20 in all of NCAA Division I in scoring defense (allowing only 58 ppg) and fewest turnovers (committing just 11.4 per game)

they also have TWO players (Terell Parks at 66% and Obi Emegano at 59%) inside the Top 20 nationally in FG%, plus Ceola Clark is currently 5th nationally in 3-pt FG% at 49.3%

..and WIU star Ceola Clark was named Summit League Player of the Week

Too bad they didn't pull out the game against Michigan. Had they won that game, WIU could have been at least gotten a good look on Selection Sunday as an at-large candidate. As it is though, if they can win the Summit League tournament, WIU would not be one of those teams I would want to play in the NCAA Tournament!

BTW - in a little remotely related news -- long, long time close friend of Jim Molinari's and co-assistant way back in the 70's & 80's at DePaul,
Joey Meyers was just fired in the NBDL...
Jim Platt was also an assistant on those 1980's DePaul teams under Ray Meyer...

Watch for Joey to get back into the college scene somewhere...he has the connections...

saw another funny quote from Mo...regarding the exposure WIU has gotten recently on ESPN

"I went recruiting the other night, and when I got the the gym I told him who I was and he actually said he had heard of us guys"

BTW -- I saw a report where backup center David Gebru is leaving...
Hope fully Mo has someone coming in for next year..

Here is an article about the WIU game tonight at Oregon State-

It doesn't mention that Gebru, reserve center is off the team now, and also Tommie Tyler, starting guard and 4th leading scorer, did not make the trip.

Good news for the Fighting Necks. This team is destined for great things and heading in a very positive direction.
