The highlight of this basketball season was following TP's fine sophomore season.
He is going to give us a lot next year, along with Bell at the point (hopefully)

we're talking "hopefully", right??
we need a shooter ....an outside threat -
I haven't seen TP, and he is probably a very good player. Let's assume that TP is a little better than TB. We still need a lot more pieces to the puzzle. To give us a lot next year, TP has to adapt quickly to division 1 play. That IMO is the big question about him. I agree that we need an additional shooter, and I wouldn't mind another big if there is one out there???

I would be highly surprised if we were still in the market for a "big" for 2012 - with limited scholarships - and Prosser, Egolf, Wells all coming back - unless someone of immediate-impact-capability falls into our lap (and as we have seen in the past any big man in the spring - like Stan Simpson - gets gobs of higher offers) , I think we are far more in need of shooting, ball handling, shooting, wing scoring, shooting, defending, and shooting...
BTW - speaking of Stan Simpson - who is currently getting a lot of mention on Illini talk boards because he's the poster child of Bruce weber's sometimes horrible recruiting, since Weber went for Stan Simpson instead of John Shurna at the time the scholarship was being offered.....
Simpson has now moved on and already wasted over THREE years of college and now nearly three years of eligibility by aiming too high out of high school - then jumping at an offer to Memphis after juco...
Looks like poor Stan has made the same mistake again....
After getting a little chance early this season to show his skills - Stan Simpson has now been relegated to the very DEEPEST aspects of Memphis bench - probably even on the other side of the waterboy...
if he were any deeper on the bench, he'd be in the lockerroom.
He doesn't even play a millisecond in their few close games, and even in massive 20-30 blowouts like when Memphis annihiliates Tulane - Stan still gets just two scoreless minutes of very deep garbage time.
He has totalled only 63 minutes of play since Xmas (about 3-4 minutes per game that Memphis has played) and he has only scored 5 buckets in the past 20 games - well under 1 ppg since way early in December...

I agree that there probably isn't an impact big out there. But if there is... This is why I think we should at least add a juco power forward assuming we get a shooter to go along with TP and Bell.
Egolf- coming off an injury and is injury prone--if he returns, it will be his last year.
Wells- project who is not proven at the division 1 level
Prosser- entering into his Junior year
Looks like a thin roster at the 4-5 to me and adding a power forward would benefit us IMO in the long run.

No doubt we need another JUCO big, we also need a 6-5 shooting guard and a JUCO point guard so Bell does not have to play 35 minutes, if BU expects to be competitive next season then we need 3 more players that can contribute immediately.
Coty Clarke still averaging 13.5 rpg - 2nd in the nation
and interestingly there are not a lot of great 3-pt shooters in juco this year --
there's only a handful of kids shooting better than the mid 40's%, and even fewer that do so at a top level of juco competition...so I suspect we're not going to get any juco shooters
Haven't heard much on this board about TP lately.
I went onto the Dodge City CC athletics site to see what's going on.
Their post-season begins tonight.
Here is a blip from the latest article about their previous game & tourney news:
DC Loses to Butler in OT, Play KCK in Region VI
Posted March 5, 2012
The DC3 men's basketball team knew they were going to the Region VI tournament, what they didn't know was who and where they would play. After losing a tough game on the road to Butler 94-92 in Overtime, The Conqs found out they would travel to Kansas City to take on Kansas City Kansas CC in the 1st round of the Region VI. In the Butler loss, DC was led by RJ McGhee with 25 pts, while Tyshon Pickett and Clarence Willard both chipped in 22 pts. With the loss, the Conqs are now 19-11 overall. If they beat KCK on Wednesday, they will then advance to Wichita for the next round at Hartman Arena.
Thanks -- I've been keeping reports and stats for Tyshon on a separate site..but in that OT loss, Tyshon played 41 minutes, had 22 pts, and 10 rebs...
he was 9-12 from the floor and 4-7 on FTs, and eight of his 10 rebs were offensive rebounds.
He also had 2 assists, and two steals and had only one turnover in 41 minutes!
Teammate RJ McGhee who was committed to Eastern Illinois but they had a coaching change - was 7-19 from 3-pt range, and had 25 pts...
TP had another solid game - a double-double in Dodge City's Post-season play:
Here's the story - the story about him being named to All-Conference follows this story.
Conqs Move On
Posted March 8, 2012
In the 1st round of the Region VI Tournament, as the #5 seed from the west, the DC3 men's basketball team had to travel to KCKCC. The Conqs won on the road 88-84 and advance to Wichita for the next round. DC shot 57% from the field and forced 14 turnovers on their way to the playoff victory. Dodge got a big game from Tony Phillips, scoring 23 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Tyshon Pickett, who was recently named to the Jayhawk West All Conference 2nd team had 21 points and 11 rebounds. With the win, Dodge will now take on Seward County on Sunday March 11th at Hartman Arena in Wichita. Game time is TBA.
2 Conqs Pick Up All Conference Honors
Posted March 8, 2012
Tyshon Pickett and RJ McGhee both earned 2nd team All Conference honors. Pickett, who was an All Region Honorable Mention as a freshman led Dodge in rebounding, averaging 9 rebounds a game. He is also second on the team in scoring (14.9 pts). McGhee was second in the conference in scoring at 19.3 points per game, and made 63 3 pt shots. Seward County took home the Coach of the Year (Bryan Zollinger) and Player of the Year Honors (Deverell Biggs), while Barton's Algie Key was named Freshman of the Year.
I don't know about other Braves fans, but Geno's 1st 2 recruits for the upcoming season sound exciting for the future!
The Shocks were going after TP, so you know he must be pretty good.
I know we can't expect TP to be putting up 15 ppg & 9-10 rpg like he has this season, but his community college experience in the Jayhawk conference should prepare him somewhat, and fill a much-needed role for the Braves, as he should help with some low-post scoring, crashing the boards, and hopefully toughness on D.

Dodge City beat Kansas City CC in their first Regional Tournament game...88-84 as noted above...
Here's Tyshon's stat line - he was definitely one of the PLAYERS of the Game!!
35 minutes, 10-13 from the floor, 21 pts, 11 rebounds, 2 asst, 2 steals, and zero turnovers

From what I've noticed about TP's stat lines (though I've followed about half), is that he shoots a pretty high % from the floor. He also doesn't turn the ball over often.
I wonder if he cleans up a lot of garbage around the rim. I've heard he has a nice jump shot too - true??
But I'd rather have a guy who goes hard to the goal and gets higher % shots, even if contested. We have WE who can knock down the open 12-18 foot shot, which will be something we didn't have much last year.
He will need to work on his FT shooting along with all the other Braves.
