  • MVC Player of the Week

is Indiana State's RJ Mahurin (kind of a puzzler...)
He had 14 pts off the bench vs. Vanderbilt (the Sycs only game of the week) ...he also had 2 rebounds and an assist -
Meanwhile Doug McDermott's 25 points in his only game this week and Greg Echenique's 18 points & 14 rebounds go unnoticed...as does Walt Lemon's 40 pts this week against two teams on the road...

MSU's Mike Bizoukas was Newcomer of the Week

Walt Lemon should have won the award, his stats were better and both games were on the road , one decent game against a very good team does not measure up to 2 good games against 2 good teams.

      What a jip job!

Walt deserved it. If WL scored 14 vs. a top 25 team, and Mahurin scored 40 total on the road vs. decent opponents, award goes to Mahurin.
Maybe it's a matter of that ISU-blue beat a top 25 team so accolades go to someone from that team (highest scorer), and also ISU-blue is picked much higher in the Valley pre-season poll (maybe???)
Anyways, get 'em this week, Walt!!!!

Level of competition clearly was the most important factor this week to the voters. Stats don't always tell the entire story and it's definitely better PR to promote a win over a top 25 team.

Creighton played Houston Baptist, which currently sports a 269 RPI (realtimerpi.com) and has losses to four teams with 200+ RPIs.

BU's opponents certainly weren't terrible, but they weren't top-25 teams either and the Braves split games. Drexel's (114) top RPI win is against BU (139) and George Washington (146) hasn't beaten a team higher than 244 in the RPI. They're average teams.

Indiana State won AT Vanderbilt (15 RPI). That's definitely the best win of the week.

FWIW, Lemon and Echinique both had great weeks and are "Noteworthy" http://mvc-sports.com/media/2011-12/.../mvc_12_19.pdf

I understand level of competition but it was one game and Walt was excellent in 2, no way you can compare what one player does in one game while another is great in 2, makes no sense.

It seems there is a rule: the MVC gives the POY to the best player on a team that won all games that week. Especially when that team had notable wins. Unfortunately, WL was out of the running because we lost @ Drexel.

Last year I was very happy when we had a winning week so AW had the opportunity to be recognized for his season's great performance...

Most of you have not heard much about R.J. Mahurin..........yet. He is a 6'8 redshirt sophomore that was part of the whole frosh class that redshirted year before last (Odum, Mahurin, Logan & Lucas Eitel). All four of them are from the immediate area as Mahurin is from Rockville, IN, just north of Terre Haute. He is a player and he can shoot the 3-ball too. He comes off the bench as the #6 or #7 man along with Dwayne Lathan.

thanks -- and most of the BU fan base is familiar with RJ -- and I am happy for him that he got the award --

but I would like to see a couple things - although I doubt we ever will...

-first, since the preseason All-Conference picks and post season awards are always OPEN about who voted for who and the MVC tells everyone who is doing the voting - then I'd like to know the same thing about the Weekly awards.
Why the secrecy? -- they have never revealed who it is that makes this selection... is it just some secretary at the MVC offices or is it someone who has actually seen some of the competition?

-then I'd also like to see the MVC name the criteria -- because it is obvious that they heavily favor only those teams who won all their games that week, and especially if they upset someone...and so the best player on any team that knocks off a ranked team gets the award regardless of anyone else in the league putting up career numbers or a near triple-double.
There was even one week previously when Andrew Warren had consecutive games of around 30 pts, yet didn't get the nod...
I think the award should be the guy who had the best performance and not biased by other factors...

And I agree to disagree with your thought process. Colt Ryan's regular flood of points after a game has already been decided time after time would always win him the award even though Evansville usually is on the losing end. Basketball is a team game and the teams that win most of the time play as a team. The best performance on that team should get the award, not the guy who does 30 pts. in a losing cause.

The idea of "best performance" is inherently subjective and bias. The notion that you can just give it to the guy with the "best performance" is specious.

This is a classic point-counter-point debate, with everyone bias toward their way of thinking. I have no doubt that if the shoe were on the other foot, folks would sing a different tune.

I agree - but why don't they at least tell us who is making the selection and define some of their criteria...
