  • Pac-12 - are they really bad this year?

It's early but the PAC-12 looks weak...they are currently ranked last among BCS conferences and well behind A-10, CUSA, MVC, and MWC...

    Numerous bad losses..
USC has lost to Cal Poly, SDSU, Nebraska
Arizona State lost to Pepperdine & New Mexico
UCLA starts 0-2 with losses to Marymount & Middle Tennessee, and struggled even to put away Chaminade..
New member Utah has losses to Boise State & Montana State
The conference currently has an overall record of 29-17 compared to the Valley's 25-10

They're the worst of the six traditional power conferences this year.

I have a feeling their best teams are better than our best teams, and their worst teams are still light years ahead of SIU, but I think we can be comparable in the meaty middle of our conferences.

Yes, our meaty middle is pretty chunky (in a good way) this season.
And the meaty middle I would consider to be 4 of the following 6:

      Indy St.
      Evansville
      UNI
      Missouri St.
      Bradley
      Drake

Seems you haven't appeared much lately TAS. Good to hear from you again!

I was thinking about doing a report card for each team in the Valley up through tonight's games. This includes a breakdown of quality wins (vs. teams that are known across the country (like Nevada - not SIU-Ed), bad losses (games they should have won), and a short synopsis of how they're doing relative to the Pre-season predictions from the MVC...of course with the overall grade based on those predictions.
But this is right up your ally, soooo......
(I'd be happy to do it too, but would be shorter and maybe less accurate)

One writer for CBS actuallly thinks Oregon State has a chance to win the Pac 12 because of how bad all the other teams are.

For the record, I think this is a real stretch. Oregon State has had 4 seasons in a row under Craig Robinson without a winning record, and they lost 13 of their last 16 games last year, to finish 9th out of the 10 teams in the Pac-10 last year. OSU has had only 1 winning season in the last 20 years, and that was barely above .500 (7-15 in 2004-05).

Pfft, the less work for me, the better. It's easier to tell people why they're wrong than to tell them what the story is to begin with

USC losing to San Diego St. and Arizona St. losing to New Mexico are nothing to be ashamed of as they will both probably be NCAA Tournament teams. But USC losing to Cal Poly and Arizona St. losing to Pepperdine?????? Not good! And UCLA just looks scary bad! I think even SIU could give them a game!

Utah hasn't been good for several years, and their joining the Pac 12 probably hurts the league in the short term.

Yeah, it looks like they are on track for another mediocre year, though they do have a couple of strong teams at the top. If the Valley isn't comparable to them, then the West Coast Conference probably is. We could see three teams out of that conference, which would be bad for the Pac 12 considering they share the same geographical areas.

Pac 12 went 1-2 last night losing to both BCS opponents but USC barely edged lowly 0-4 Morgan State
in front of only an announced 2200 and there was no football game anywhere.
Morgan State actually led pretty much the whole game, ahead by 8 at half and didn't lose their lead to USC until the final 2 minutes...

Morgan St is the best team in the MEAC, although that's equivalent to saying they're the tallest midget at a NBA camp.

I guess Pac-12 MBB programs don't cheat as much as other conferences!

Update on the Pac-12 -- things just not getting any better...
A couple schools - Stanford, Cal, Arizona - have played fairly good schedules and have good records.

Two more (Oregon, Oregon State) have played much weaker schedules and have some bad losses.

The rest (Wash., Wash. St., Colorado, Arizona State, USC, and UCLA) are playing worse than most midmajors...Washington is on a bad losing streak

Utah is absolutely hopeless this year

Now -- in an effort to strengthen the league -- the Pac-12 (believe it or not) may look to add a new member...
the University of Beijing!!! (this is NOT a joke)

Saw the bit about Notre Dame possibly playing Stanford in China. That means a Friday Night game!
