  • A couple of surprising upsets

    This one surprised me...a little
UIC loses to Quincy - 65-61

BUT here's the one that blew me away -AND THIS IS A FINAL SCORE!!
    Cal Poly 42 - USC 36!!!
USC's home crowd was only 2600 - ouch!

and Presbyterian over #20 ranked Cincinnati 56-54

Green Bay beat future BU opponent Wyoming 52-44 - Larry Nance, Jr. - scoreless

BU's next couple opponents faced off...
Wisconsin 69 - Wofford 33 - Wofford had only 12 in the first half
Jordan Taylor only 4 pts, Ben Brust 9 pts

Big football game tonight for USC explains the low attendance for an early non-conference bball game.

Will be interesting to see if we can get 50+ vs. the Badgers. They are one of the peskiest teams on defense year after year and can make you look really bad. Exhibit A - Wofford!

Didn't Presbyterian just enter D-I this year or last? And I remember that a few of the players sat out the season we played them so they'd be eligible in the 1st year of D-I.

The scary thing is that Wisconsin has not given up more than 41 points a game so far! So we need to keep them under 50 points, if even possible, to have a better chance of winning. Or we better learn how to score about 60 or 70 against them very quickly.

Regarding Presbyterian, they are in their 5th year as a D1 team. I don't know how many of those seasons were provisional, but they do reside in the Big South conference. That is the conference's second win against a BCS team as first place Coastal Carolina recently beat LSU for the second year in a row! Which goes to show you that many elite lower majors are more than capable of beating great teams, especially come tournament time.

That is shameful that an "elite" program out of a BCS league would only draw 2600 people! Even if this game was up against the USC/Oregon football game last night, USC was on the road there, so really no excuses for USC to draw that kind of attendence, even against Cal Poly. But that may explain why Cal Poly had an easy time with USC. Hardly any crowd noise in favor of USC. And this should defeat the argument that Bradley's fans aren't loyal and that are attendence is in danger of falling to low levels. Our attendence is down a bit due to the economy and losing teams, but I think we are still doing pretty darn well considering. Try telling that to all of those Trojan basketball "fans" who did not show up to that game last night!

This also continues the trend of the Pac 10/12 over the last few years of embarassing loses by formally elite programs to mid-majors like Cal Poly. But don't worry. Look for a minimum of four bids, if not more out of the Pac 12 this year!

As I said in my above post, the football team was on the road. And while it was a sweet victory for their football team over the #4 team in the country, this is a team that is still banned from postseason play this year (including the Pac 12 championship), so really what meaning did this game really have? I understand that the attendence would be down for the basketball game. That stands to reason. But only 2600? You would think a minimum of 5 to 6000 would show up. Obviously having only 2600 people showing up hindered the team's performance quite a bit!

A big football game, yes. But the basketball team is trying to make the postseason (unless they are on probation as well), and early season losses like this hurt as much as losing late in the season.

Another bad loss looming for Maryland. They are getting blown out in Puerto Rico by Iona, down 21 points with 6 minutes left.

And this is the same Iona team that lost to Purdue 91-90! It looks like Iona may be a better team than Iowa.

Here's an upset - Saint Louis beats Washington 77-64, local star Scott Suggs has to wonder if he should have stayed home and played for the Billikens -- he's only scored 400 points in his 3+season career at Washington

                  ..and this one's a bit surprising - Furman 63 - Loyola 51!

I notice even in a huge blowout for Iowa State - ex-Saluki Anthony Booker still plays only a few garbage time minutes -- he must be real happy he transferred

Dana Altman had a really tough game even though his team beat SEMO..
First - as as soon as the game was over, they announced - his most heralded recruit ever - 5-Star ranked Jabari Brown had left the team..saying he's quitting over unnamed issues..
Also two starters injured- Tony Woods (severe ankle injury) and Carbondale Brehm Prep's Bruce Barron (mild concussion)
