But maybe not so tough for ISU fans....
Question:
When did Illinois State University become the official name of the
university in Normal, Illinois, and what did it used to be called?
Answer (mouse over to read):
The school was founded in 1857 as the "Illinois State Normal University", but was also generally called "Normal Teachers College".
There were some minor changes to the name over the years but the name was changed officially on January 1, 1964 to "Illinois State University at Normal", then in 1968 took its current name of "Illinois State University".
Both times the change was accompanied by lots of dissent and bickering as alumni always wanted to keep things as they were, and sometimes alumni can have a lot of influence.
Each change took an official act of the State Legislature.
By the way, several votes of alumni and faculty took place in the late '50s and 60's regarding the name change, and the consistent 2nd and 3rd place names that lost out were:
-"Illinois State Normal University" (as several felt the term "Normal" needed to be retained in the name.)
-"Central Illinois University"..this one just never had enough backing.
In just ONE YEAR, on October 13, 2007, Illinois State University will celebrate its 150th anniversary at its Homecoming football game.
