  • 50 Greatest College Basketball Players

Just someone else's weird list - can't really tell if this guy is serious or whether this whole endeavor is just a complete joke...
and the guy has some weird criteria.....
... but the only Bradley mention is at #50 when the guy ranks Alfredrick Hughes as #50 and mentions his 20 consecutive shots missed vs. Bradley.

The biggest problem most are going to have with this guy's list is the fact that somehow he is familiar with and includes such obscurities as Gerry McNamara, Daren Queenan, Michael Graham, Phillip Hutcheson and John Pierce...

No way there were 31 college players better than Rick Mount, but the travesty doesn't end there!
..and the fact that he doesn't even have Oscar Robertson or Larry Bird anywhere on his list totally disqualifies the guy and makes his list a laughingstock.

I wouldn't consider Gerry McNamara obscure, playing in the Big East on ESPN all the time, plus a national championship and all tournament team selection as a freshman.

I read that list yesterday and it had me scratching my head, too; until I read his criteria. Among those was this statement:

The individual's college career must be more meaningful than his pro career.
after reading all his criteria, the list made much more sense.

I lived in Indy when Mount played for Purdue and seen him play against Butler. He was phenomenal but I still think "Pistol Pete" was even a better shooter.
I will say the stories about Mount in HS & college were legendary in the Indy area when I lived there. I always heard how he shot baskets for 2 hours, sawm 1 hour, shot baskets for 1 hour and then went home for lunch at noon. Was back at 1 to shoot for 2 hours, swim 1 hour, shoot for 2 hours and then go home for supper. be back at 7 for 2 more hours of shooting. The only day he didn't do that was suppose to be Sundays when he either took the day completely off or would just shoot part of the afternoon.
I have no proof if that really was his routine but that was the rumors in the Indy area when I lived there.

I saw Mount play a few times on television and he was "unconscious" in the sense that he could fire from anywhere inside 35 feet and swish even without looking at the hoop - his turnaround jumpers were amazing....
He was one of the best if not the best shooter in the history of high school & college basketball - but not at the pro level.

but if you compare to Maravich - Pete had so many other skills - seeing the court, dribbling, faking, passing - that Mount did not have - but I still think Mount was a better shooter from distance..regularly hitting over 50% of his shots - most of which were long ones even back when a long one was only worth 2 pts.

Once Mount got to the NBA his size was a factor and he didn't get as many good looks and his shooting ability was negated.
Most places listed Mount as 6-3 but that maybe was a stretch...

I think Mount only played in the ABA.

If Hersey isn't on the list it's not legit.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

but a whole lot of people would - but that's a debate point - I think it's undeniable that extremely few people would list him among the TOP 50 college basketball players EVER!

...getting back to one of the earlier issues in this older thread..

..even his bio on one site cites TWO different major articles in which McNamara was labelled the "Most overrated player in the Big East".

McNamara wasn't even the Player of the Year in his own conference yet the article lists him as better than all but 47 college players EVER!
BTW - his senior year (2006), his team finished tied for 9-10th in the Big East, he lead his team & the league BY far in shots taken & 3-pt shots taken but was terribly inefficient - he hit only 35% overall (very low) and 33% (well under the nat'l avg) from the arc.
He believed he'd get drafted and was even projected by many as a 2nd rounder but he went undrafted and played a couple unproductive Euro & D-League stints.
Sorry - he does not belong on that old list and I am thinking the guy who drew up that list partly as a joke - especially since at least two of the guys he has in the TOP 30 NEVER even played a single game in D-I and only played against DII competition
