  • Northern Illinois loses exhibition game to D3 Carthage College

Welcome to D1 coaching Mark Montgomery! The new head coach of Northern Illinois coached his first game tonight, an exhibition game against Carthage College. NIU lost to Carthage 74-70 in overtime. Carthage should have won the game in regulation, but one of their best free throw shooters missed 2 FTs at the end of regulation to allow the game to go to overtime. But Carthage pulled ahead in overtime and held on for the win.

Carthage is an NCAA Division III college in Kenosha, Wisconsin. They were picked to finish 5th in the 8-team Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) this season.

Carthage is coached by the only NCAA coach named Bosko-
16th year head coach Bosko Djurickovic-
Bosko Djurickovic completed his 24th season as Carthage’s head in 2019-20 after a stellar career (1985-1994) at North Park University. He officially announced his

One interesting thing about Carthage- they list an amazing 28 players on their varsity roster-

Carthage College has a fascinating history. It was relocated to Kenosha in the early 1960's from Carthage, Il. Prior to its existence in Carthage, the college had been located in both Hillsboro and Springfield. It was founded in the 1840s as a Luthernan school.

Utah also lost their exhibition to Adams 61-60

Michigan scored only 47 points but escaped getting upset by Wayne State,
Michigan played their starters heavy minutes (35-36) and even though it was an exhibition game,
Max Bielfeldt did not even get in the game!!! Donivine -- give the guy a call!!!

Carthage College has a beautiful campus on Lake Michigan. Great little small college atmosphere. Nice football stadium with a new student center built on the back. Nice rec center/basketball arena.

Very good little school and obviously good basketball players.

Bradley will have its hands full with the College of Wooster on Tuesday.

I am not surprised. Many (all?) D3 schools have large rosters because they don't make cuts. You go out for the team and you make it. Wooster lists 20.

Gosh I hope not. I really expect us to run away with this game. Several of our guys should put up numbers that make fans happy. It will still leave questions because they are D3 but, really, this should not be close.

I don't know why Bradley fans think this will be an easy 20 point victory. Just look at some other exhibition results this year and in the past. In this thread we are talking about a D1 team losing to a D3 team and Carthage isn't near as good a team as Wooster.

Two years ago BU lost to a UW Platteville team that isn't as good as this Wooster team. I expect a tight game. I fully expect BU to win but I would be more shocked with a blowout than I would a close game.

Wright State loses exhibition game to Central State 56-50
                XAVIER barely beats BELLARMINE 76-73
Chicago State beats Roosevelt 79-59 - ex-ISU Redbird Jeremy Robinson had 20 pts, 8 rebs, 5 blocks, 5 steals, and was even 2-4 on 3-pointers...whoa, did Jank miss on this one?

Did anyone see what Purdue did to Northern Illinois last night?
                  Purdue beat NIU 96-34-

Matt Painter is known as a coach who does not run up the score, and none of the Purdue starters played many minutes. NIU must have a lot of trouble shooting and scoring. With a loss at home to DIII Carthage and a 62 point blowout to Purdue with their reserves playing most of the game, it looks like it could be a very long year for NIU.

didn't I hear that NIU supposedly landed a stud recruiting class....so did any of them play?

On a different note -- WIU is within 2 at the half at Dayton

I haven't heard anyone say NIU had a stud recruiting class, but regardless NIU's freshmen combined to go 5-31 shooting yesterday, and take out Abdel Nader's subpar 4-13 performance, and the rest of the freshmen shot 1-18. Not good for a team that will need to rely heavily on their newcomers. Long season ahead for the huskies.

Evansville 43 trips to the FT line!!

and I know the season's far from over -- the Sun Times blogger had said
".. Northern Illinois has its best recruiting class since the mid-1980s when West
Aurora's Kenny Battle and East Aurora's Rodney Davis headed a terrific class
hauled in by former coach John McDougal. The Class of 2011 is certainly one
that could push the Huskies towards the top of the MAC in coming years."

wow -- all that hype about their recruiting class and man, are they bad...
NIU now falls to 0-7 and they haven't even been close in any game....
even losing last night at HOME to provisional DI Nebraska-Omaha..
Their blue chipper Abdel Nader went 1-6, jus 3 pts...and in 7 games now is shoting only 31% - the team shoots only 35% from the floor, perhaps the worst in D-I
