Butler loses preseason exhibition game

Finally...it appears as if Butler's lack of state-of-the-art facilities is catching up with them. Not sure how they even fielded a D1 team before.

I know you have a problem with what Bradley is paying Geno but, you must admit Beninator, if BU wants to compete with the top teams in the MVC they must pay commensurate with those top teams. Geno is getting paid similar money as WSU, CU, UNI, and even SIU I believe. Now, it's up to Geno to justify whether or not BU overpaid.

You are very correct Braves4life. I have no problem with Bradley paying their coach commensurate with the top teams in the MVC. My problem is that we are paying this type of money to a coach who has not won a conference tournament as a head coach or an NCAA tournament appearance/game. IMHO, once a coach wins a conference tournament, and an NCAA appearance/win, then this pay tier is justified. Ben Jacobson must have banged his head against the wall after he heard about the pay scale of our coach.

I didn't see any BCS schools after him. I m sorry didn't know he was a big time recruit I just thought he was the type of recruit we have been getting.

sorry failed to see where you stated a BCS recruit had to state that the facilities made a difference....

BCS schools aren't any better at judging talent than non BCS. So just because they weren't after him doesn't make him any less the player.

oh really? did you check out what Pickett said?

Doesn't matter what he said coachdude. If he turns out to be a bad player are we still glad he talked about the facilities?

Facilities don't matter when it comes to wins and losses. They are nice to talk about, nice for recruits to mention, nice for fans to look at and talk about...in the end, they don't help a program win more or take the "next step".

Butler has some of the worst facilities in the Midwest and they've played in back-to-back NCAA title games. Facilities are way, way, way down the list when it comes to winning college basketball games and having a successful program.

Remy Abell said they did - but that's moot now..

anyway -- here's another surprising exhibition score...
Eastern New Mexico 76 - UTEP 64 and it wasn't even close, with Tim Floyd's UTEP miners trailing by as much as 22 thru the 2nd half and getting outrebounded 43-34 by a far smaller team...

Louisville struggled to an 8 pt win over their DII opponent, U of L was 1-13 from 3-pt (Kyle Kuric was 0-4)

Billy Gillispie's Texas Tech had to rally from behind to squeak by their D-II opponent (SW OK) 76-70

South Carolina trailed Ky Wesleyan in the 2nd half before rallying to win 69-59

and several other D-I's had close calls...with Morehead State losing to their NAIA opponent (Mountain St.) 84-69

Please lets stop counting whether posts are positive or negative.
I could go back and point out some posters who have gone the last 5 years without a single positive post, and they were a lot more negative than bu fan 9's.

Paging Courtney "Facilities" Lee....... ;-)

As I have said in the past, the facilities take away a long standing argument that other coaches had for a player to not go to Bradley. Are the facilities a be all end all that will attract multiple 4 star recruits all at once? Absolutely not. The facilities are a tool that Geno can use in his recruiting tool box.

Its pretty simple really. There has been no or little evidence that new facilities has a direct relationship with more wins for a basketball program.

I'm not sure it can be said any more simpler or direct than that.

If facilities are not that important, then why does Geno keep mentioning the new facilities during his speeches and interviews?

You would have to ask Geno. I think coaches, fans, administrators THINK they are important. And in some ways they are. They are nicer to look at, more comfortable, something to talk about, etc. Gives people something to feel good about.

However, again, there has been no coorelation to a program/school getting new facilities and then winning more basketball games or taking a step up in the hoops hierarchy.

What is perception here (newer, shinier, better facilities will help me win) has not been reality throughout the college basketball landscape. You don't have to look very far to see this.

Find me one program that got new facilities and then all of a sudden became a better basketball program because of it. If you do, I can show you 20 where it made absolutely no difference whatsoever.

There are about a hundred things far more important than facilities when it comes to winning basketball games and having a winning program.

Its like pro sports. Pro franchises have gotten public money to build new stadiums based on the premise of more $$ for the city, economic development, more winning, increased payroll, etc. The sad truth is that none of that has been proven to be true.

There is a major, major difference between perception and reality when it comes to facilities in the world of athletics.

There is absolutely no correlation to Pro Sports. Pro teams aren't saying that they'll win more if you give us a new stadium, they say, 'if you don't give us a new stadium, we'll leave your town.' It isn't relatable on any plane whatsoever.

As far as correlation of facilities to performance? Please see Oregon. I would bet good money that the facilities in the SEC are far better than the facilities in the MWC. Is it causation for better performance? No. But it definitely gives the SEC an even larger edge when recruiting players. Good facilities at a mid-major evens the playing field just a little bit. (I'm not saying I agree with a mid-major like BU doing such renovations in all cases, especially before acadmic buildings, only that there is some logic behind it.)

Mckillip---you are missing my point. Of course SEC schools have better facilities overall than the MWC. They have bigger budgets.

I am talking about individual schools here. Schools, who, based on a facility upgrade then made significant upgrades in on the court performance. It just doesn't happen that way.

New coaches play a much bigger role than new facilities when it comes to winning games.

We have not been in the new facilities long enough to tell on how much it will help Bradley as far as getting better players, I will say that most of the recruits that have visited made comments on how nice the facilities are so that would say it is somewhat important, our coach believes it is important so I have to say that it should help us get good players , only time will tell the whole story.

Yeah they just don't make facilities like they used to.;-)

Real fan--Im not talking about Bradley here. Bradley isn't the only Division I program recently to get new facilities. You have to look outside of the Bradley bubble and Bradley vacuum.

The problem is what is called in some circles as "terminal uniqueness"...regardless of past history and evidence, people still think THEY will be different.

How much improved have the basketball programs been at NIU, Loyola, DePaul, Marquette, UWGB, and UIC since they got either new game facilities or practice/training facilities in the last 5-10 years?
