One quote jumps out from me from Dave Reynolds' article.
"Parkside despite being picked for last place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, proved to be a worthy opponent."
Guys, the main reason I am upset about last night's performance, is that Parkside is not a very good team and we were not ready to play that game!
Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™
PEORIA, Ill. ? Taylor Brown led all players with 25 points and eight rebounds and helped the
Bradley to an 87-77 exhibition men's basketball victory versus Wisconsin-Parkside Tuesday
night.

LIGHTEN UP! IT WAS A FREAKING EXHIBITION GAME!!! We did not prepare for them at all, film-wise. Did you listen to the post-game show?? Geno said they worked on their stuff and didn't even look at film of Parkside. My goodness, it was the first game for a team picked to finish last. To crucify Ford for not having them ready to play is BS.

We were tied for last a year ago and picked last again this season!
???People say, ???Forget last year', but I want our guys to remember that one, because that will not happen again. We will be much better.??? Geno Ford, 9/22/12
Another note, the 77 points allowed tonight is just a few points higher than what Ford's team usually allowed last season. His team usually scored in the high 70's and low 80's. So tonight was pretty much right on track with what we'll see this season.
Exactly. JE said on the postgame that it's more about defensive shooting percentage than points scored, simply because of the tempo and number of possessions.

I know I know... I feel as if I am on the Score after a Bears loss. But IMHO, that does not mean that we should have been exposed the way we were last night by a bad Division II team.

I thought we looked really bad last nite too. If we play like that all year we wont win 10 games. Last nite reminded me of the Stan Albeck years.
Good comparison. If we recruit the talent to play in that system it can be really fun to watch. If we don't it can be ugly. I am somewhat confident that we can get some players in here to run the system. I hope that is the case. For now just enjoy the ride.

Very much agree with these comments.
I attended the game last night with a good friend who played for BU briefly in the 1940's. He made the Albeck comparison last night as well and we discussed this for most of the evening.

Ben...I have to ask...what exactly did you expect to see last night? I think you give coaches too much credit/blame. The players are the players. They weren't very good last year--lost three of the better ones--and replaced them with freshmen. Do the math there....it's not gonna be pretty for a while.

"Parkside despite being picked for last place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, proved to be a worthy opponent."..
-first - this quote is a tiny bit disingenuous...because in the 16-team GLVC - they play in TWO different divisions, and the voting for the East & the West Divisions is done completely separately...
So yes, they were picked last in the East (8th out of 8 teams) but no voting was taken of all 16 teams together - so we really don't know if they would have been last given the SEPARATE polls for the two divisions.
-second - It is possible this team could be better than a last place team in their conference - only time will tell...... I kinda recall Drake being picked last in the MVC in 2007-08..
That last nite was not fun for me to watch it was ugly.
OK - I'll bite --
-people clammored for more offense - we got it
-people said we gotta win the exhibitions - losing to a D-II team is intolerable - and WE WON, and won by double digits and were really never truly threatened
-people said we need to rebound better and win the rebounding battle - WE DID and we won the rebounding battle easily
-people said we need to shoot better, and we shot an amazing 53% from the field!!
-people said we need to take better care of the ball - well we had 15 TO but much of that total was because the coach used the EXHIBITION GAME as a tool to try out a new option at PG - and it paid dividends in showing the coach what maybe he needed to see!
BUT -- only two players had more than a two turnovers....for the most part when we had starters on the floor with Donivine at PG - we had almost NO turnovers.
I guess folks can choose to be bummed out or hate what they saw - but I think we'll be OK...
Donivine's stat line 5-5 from the floor, 2-2 from 3-pt, 12 pts, 4 rebs, 6 asst, NO turnovers, and I thought he had a couple of steals!
and indeed TB is 9-9 from the FT line and everyone else is 12-25
I totally agree with you about DS starting. He has had naysayers at every level of play and the kid continues to prove them wrong.
Some kids just have that ability to adapt and excel regardless of the level of competition they're facing, and Donivine is one of them. He makes up for his lack of appealing attributes through hard work and you can tell how much he has improved his ball handling, his ability to create shots for his teammates, and his defense. He's as battle tested as any true Freshman we've had and is ready to start.
