      • Russell Wilson is the obvious one for wisconsin. But the first person that did this that really made it popular (to my memory)was Kevin Kruger transferring from Arizona St. to UNLV for the 2006-07 season to play for his dad, and ended up leading them to the sweet 16.

        • So would it technically possible for a player to follow the Nick Smith (former Ill center) program and graduate in 3 years (the first being a redshirt) and transfer to another school for 2 years?
or if it were possible to get a graduate degree in 1 school year, transfer to a 3rd school?

The scenario you stated is possible. A grad student transfer could theoretically have 2 years to play at a 2nd school if he was able to finish his degree in 3 years at his first school (one of them a redshirt year). I don't think it's happened that way yet.

            • But those few examples are the same handful that are named in that article, and ...(Wilson was not basketball, & Kruger actually used a different rule - see below)

..Sam, Wood, and Bizoukas have all been discussed here - Sam is having a decent impact at Illinois as is Wood..
Bizoukas (under 5 ppg) fills a real need they have but they're still sitting at .500..however if there ever was a kid who desereved to get out and play elsewhere - this kid is what the rule was designed for!

BTW -- Bo Ryan is ticked that Michigan State & Illinois has gained advantage from this rule

..but nobody in NCAA will ever seriously oppose a rule that benefits mostly BCS schools - but they sure will if the day comes that some mid-major gets lot stronger as a result of it.

Kruger used rule #2005-54 which has since been rescinded..
It allowed any 5th year student to transfer and play even if not graduated, even if not approved by the former schools, and even if he had already transferred once...

the rule currently in effect has tightened all that

              • It's one of the few rules, out of the thousands of NCAA rules, that actually gives athletes the incentive and rewards them to stay in school and get their degree.

It's hard to find any example in college basketball where it has made a significant difference for a team, but there are still some coaches, like Tom Izzo, who don't like it-

If you look at the list of such grad student transfers (from the PJ Star), it is not exactly a list of future All-Americans. In fact most all of them are players who transferred to small schools, or who have had an insignifact impact on their new school. I really think Tom Izzo, who has benefitted more than any other coach from the rule, looks a little silly with his worries and concerns about the rule.

                • The Illini go down yet again, this time in OT against Minnesota. At least the bench scored a few points this time LOL.

Sammy with another horrible game, just 1 for 4 shooting and a couple assists. Seems to be really pushing it on that ankle right now, should probably be shutdown.

                  Illini go 3 for 22 on three's and 19 for 29 on FT's. Lose by 5.

                  • It's unbelievable how bad SM is getting hammered on Illini boards and Twitter. Most blame Bruce for playing someone who is so obviously overmatched.

Well, you do the math. One more three, and 3 more FT's, and they win.

I disagree -- Sammy handled the ball well and there's reason he's in there a ton -- especially the FULL span when Illinois made their run from 10 points down to take a 6 pt lead...
Anyone who watched the game saw the defense, the steals, the solid play that Sam gives them..
Two of his missed shots were because someone had to take the shot in a bail out situation that was not of his creation..

This loss is right on Bruce Weber as a coach...
he was sitting on two timeouts when a scramble right in front of him caused a jump-ball and they lost possession - Illini fans were even screaming for him to call a time out before they lost the ball but Bruce chose not to...

Then he again chose NOT to call a time out to set up the proper defense - when Minnesota inbounded and played for their final shot to tie in regulation --
seriously - you're up 3 points and you have your KEY player playing defense in the lane under the basket...and he not only fouls but he draws his 5th and is gone for the OT period!!!
You DON'T need anyone in the lane where a 2-pointer if openly allowed still results in a win - and the only place you really need defense would be at the 3-pt arc??

Why were the Illini playing any defense or had any player AT ALL in the lane or anywhere near it??
Don't blame Sammy - he helped the Illini get out of a 10-pt hole - blame Bruce

                        • I don't blame Sam....and I only saw the second half.....but he didn't do much either IMO.....at this point with the ankles he can't really guard anyone it seems.

The last foul on Leonard was bad IMO too. He really didn't do anything as the announcers said....but he still could have let the drive go....Leonard made 2 other huge mistakes with the bad pass late in the game and a foul 25 feet from the basket after crying about a play on the offensive end.

                          • In short I would of loved to see SM in a Braves uniform this year. I would have to be he would have made this team a ton better. Last nights game showed us that we are missing a PG and a shooter.

Sammy with 18 minutes, 0 points, 1 assist. He missed a 3 which was his only shot.
