Exactly! Sammy did what Sammy does, he's a WINNER! He's performed great against that level of competition and the competition he faced while at Bradley. My point has always been let's wait and see how he performs over the course of a tough and grueling BIG 10 season before we crown him. Is that so difficult for some to understand? There's nothing "veiled" about it.... Come on, man.
I'm with you...I don't get why this is so hard for people to understand. Sam did this stuff time and time again at Bradley. No one is questioning his leadership ability, etc. But to compare him to Big 10 legends when he is still playing lower level teams that he could play at Bradley is a bit ridiculous. He's proven he can do this to most teams, let's just see what he does against consistent higher competition. I'm not saying I don't think he can compete I just don't think he's a great like Neitzel. I think deep down everybody agrees with that too, whether they want to admit it or not.

I'm sure you're right Bradleyguy. But there's a VERY vocal minority that wants us to believe otherwise. I see it as my job to stand up for truth and justice and to be the LOUD (and unpopular) voice of reason.
B4L - be fair - I never used the word great - don't see where anyone ever did - and I never made any claim as to comparative talent between DN & SM, I left that for you to decide.....
-- all I did was to cite and compare their career stats.
In virtually every single category, Sammy's stats are as good as or better than Neitzel...

That's right, you didn't. I didn't say you did. Bradleyguy used it to describe Nietzel..... nothing more, nothing less. We're talking about comparing Nietzel to Sammy. Statistically, they're similar. Leadership qualities? Similar. Comparing the two to decide who's better? Can't tell you yet. That's my point. If Sammy displays the same qualities that Nietzel did against B10 competition THEN I will be willing to make the comparison that the two may have been equally good.

When I think of all-time greats ... Walker, Phegley, Hawkins, etc. Guess it depends on perspective and how many all-time greats you want to include. Inclusion of too many, though, diminishes the truly great. It's all-time GREAT, not all-time VERY GOOD.
Although he played just 1 year at Bradley, Moline Maroon Steve Kuberski could be considered a "great" for averaging 23 ppg and 10 rpg in his one season. Kuberski then played 9 NBA seasons.
Let's not forget, Kuberski started at Illinois and transferred to Bradley. Maybe Sam is just the player to be named later in the Kuberski trade.
If you watched the game last night you'd understand SamM actually played very well. And if you watched the game against UNLV you'd know that, despite his awful line, most of the rest of the Illini team played even worse than Sam. But don't include any of that...
In your attempt to discredit Sammy, you "forgot" to mention that he is still averaging double digits for a Top 25 team, 10.6 points per game, good for 4th best on an Illinois team filled with 4 star and 5 star recruits.
I also can't see what reason you would list his rebounding stats unless you expect a point guard to be rebounding over his 7-foot center. But since you mentioned rebounding, I notice Sam is averaging 2.3 rebounds per game which is respectable for a point guard, and better than some of the heralded big men recruits the Illini have, as well as more than Illinois' other point guard who was a star recruit, Tracy Abrams.
But you also "forgot" to mention that Sam has averaged about 4 assists per game over the past 6 games, by far the best on the Illini, and his assist to turnover ratio of 2:1 is head and shoulders better than anyone on the BU team.
Also, though Sam's 3-point field goal percentage is down a little this season coming off his year of inactivity, it would still be one of the best 3-point percentages if he was playing for Bradley. And his 89% free throw percentage is far better than anyone on Bradley, and that alone would have probably won Bradley several more games this season.
BTW, I hadn't posted these links before, but since there are so-called fans who want to keep trying to denigrate current and former players like Sam, here they are.
People can think whatever they want, but the Illini coaches and fans are really happy they have Sam as their team leader.
The Herald-Review out of Decatur had this article about who is the MVP for the Ilini so far. Sammy is mentioned prominently, as well as being the only player featured in the page header (twice)! Really says something about what the fans think of Sammy!-
Here was an earlier article from an Illini sports site (IlliniHQ.com) naming Sammy as the team's MVP to that point, and mentioning that former Coach Lou Henson thought that Sammy was the team's MVP in their early season Cancun tournament- Talked to Lou Henson this morning. He's in New Mexico. The coach thought Sam Maniscalco was the Illini's MVP in Cancun...
