This is becoming a broken record for him, unfortunately.

I'm sure this isn't how he envisioned the end of his basketball career playing out.
Nope - but he is maintaining a great attitude considering.

I have a feeling had he stayed at BU, he would be nowhere near as effective as his Junior season. He really could have helped us out at the point, and likely would have still played 30+ minutes, and still manage 10 ppg.
But I just don't see us having finished Top 4 this season even with Sammy (regardless of coach).

Hated to see him go, but understand and back him up. And I don't want to come out and say it was a blessing in disguise that he left, but there are a few positives for the team looking ahead to the future:

    1) More PT for SS and JC. (JC is playing more now because the other guys struggled; had Sammy stayed, SM, DSE, WL, JE get the bulk of minutes)
    2) Walt might just be a more complete player and ready to handle whatever role he's caled on for next season.
    3) (This is a stretch) We will certainly see improvement in GF's 2nd season!

Thanks for giving us a laugh -- we could sure use those 17 minutes of solid ball handling against intense defense in which Sammy makes very few mistakes.

The difference in this game was the maturity and experience..
Indiana starts 3 juniors, a very experienced sophomore, and a 5-start blue chip freshman.
Illinois starts only one junior, 3 sophs (two of whom played virtually NONE or very little last year), and a freshman.
Sammy's experience, leadership, and play kept them from being blown out.

BTW -- if you have so little regard for what Sam gives them - tell me who you'd use instead?
The only other guard off the bench (Henry) already played MORE than Sam and yet is NOT a ballhandler and had 3 times as many turnovers as Sammy.

That leaves as the only remaining guards they even dress, just Jean Selus & Kevin Berardini (both little used walk-ons) - who have between the two of them exact ZERO made baskets this season and not a single stat of any kind against any team except Chicago State.

Weber is stuck with what he's got now, so Sammy has to play some...even though he is really incapable of giving them anything in terms of tangible production. Leadership, maturity, experience, ball handling, etc...those are all nice traits to have in a bench player when you are winning games, but when you're losing games and struggling to generate points, you really need a guy to give you more than 'well, at least he doesn't make very many mistakes...and he's very supportive of his teammates during timeouts'.

But the real mistakes were made by Weber before the season started...if Illinois was so thin at the point guard position, he certainly shouldn't have used his last ride on a mid-major guard who is a defensive liability, has chronic ankle problems, and only one year of eligibility left...

But they are where they are now, so be it...

        • but Boiler - he only found that scholarship was going to be open in June when Jereme Richmond left - he'd have never found anyone even half as capable as getting Sammy -- there just were no other options...

The Illini actually start 2 juniors, 2 sophs (one is a redshirt), and a true freshman.

I think he looks slow. It looks as if he is even hobbling a little bit while walking up and down the court. He has to be in pain.

              • Thee are some real haters on this board. I've never seen a tougher player then SM. The kid guts it out and there is no appreciation for it. I would not care if he played for ISU red. I like players that play with that kind of heart. I'm not an Illini fan by any stretch or am really following SM there but I do take my hat off to his effort.

                • It's OK to admit that Sam is having an abysmal season. If he's such a good leader he should put on a suit. ILL played their best ball when he wasn't playing. Maybe this is a coincidence, maybe not.

Of course I don't know him and I don't have an axe to grind w/ the BU admin so what do I know?

                    Haters? huh?

Calling an unproductive player an unproductive player is now an act of hate? Wow.

Sam Maniscalco isn't my kid, so I really don't feel any reason to unconditionally worship every move that he makes.

Just calling it as I see it. Sorry if that upsets you.

                    • It's really too bad to see him having such a hard time with his injuries. My ACL tear stopped me cold back in the early 80's and it has affected the rest of my life because I blew it out multiple times. Without that base his shot will be off as it has. He was a pretty dependable shooter before all the problems. With that being said, Sammy was never much of a defender and that always drove me crazy. Taller players shoot over him and quicker players go around him. His injuries have magified that deficiency in his game. So, right now all he has is his leadership abilities, but the Illini need more.

                      • Boiler I never called you a hater! There are some on this board who are going out of their way to smack him down. I'm just trying to point out that I'd go to war with him. I'm pointing out a positive instead of trying to bash him. So if for some reason you have an issue with that then that's your problem. Yes there are SM haters on this board! I'm not one of them. Do I wish he stuck around?...Well you can see my past posts and see where I stand.

                        • I wonder how he feels about the transfer now. Had he been a brave he would have left a star and a legacy. Now he is a scape goat and the target of the blame game. The gras isn't always greener

                            • People don't go out of the way to bash him, everyone is posting a fair and balanced opinion. Several people were posting threads when he was starting out good and now several people are continuing the updates. Why should we stop when he does bad?

                              • Sam got the start in tonight's loss to Purdue: 0 points, 3 assists. ILL faithful booed when he came in for Abrams.

0-4 from behind the arc was his shooting line.

Sam has missed 17 consecutive 3's and has made 1 FG since Dec. 27.
