  • Exhibition scores from Friday night

Gonzaga beats NAIA Carroll College 95-51, it wasn't even close.
11 players played 10 minutes or more, preseason All American Robert Sacre had 11 pts/4 rebs in 18 minutes, and ex-Shocker recruit Marquise Carter started and in 10 minutes had 6 pts, 1 reb.

North Carolina, preseason #1, beat UNC-Pembroke 100-58, but only led by 11 at half then UNC-P had several very long dry spells in the 2nd half...Harrison Barnes had 13 despite not hitting a FG until 7 minutes into the 2nd half, Zeller had 18, attendance 16,852.

Sean Harris' future team Utah State beat UC-San Diego (DII) easily 74-42, leading by 21 at half and 36 with 10 minutes to go - and they subbed liberally but USU had all FIVE starters still playing together until 3:18 left in the game!

Idaho beat the Evergreen State Geoducks 96-72...the Geoducks had only six players eligible to play and all were guards...so they were vertically challenged and got outrebounded 68-24!!!
Highly touted one-time Drake verbal Wendell Faines was 8-11 and 19 pts/6 rebs/5 blocks off the bench in his D-I debut!!

Evansville plays D-III DePauw today in the opening game at their NEW Ford Center home arena...

SIU plays UIS Sunday - UIS has 6-10 East Peoria product Dylan Sparkman

Creighton has a closed scrimmage vs. Colorado Sunday

Here are some exhibition results from Saturday

Evansville beat D-III DePauw 81-52 in front of 3846 fans in their new arena.
Kenny Harris & Ned Cox had 13, Denver Holmes & Colt Ryan had 12.
It was really never close - UE charged right out to big leads...and they were ahead 42-18 at the half.
Evansville's front court was Peeler, Harris, & Holmes at forward - meaning they had a starting lineup with only one guy taller than 6-5...and it showed as their starting forwards totalled only 11 rebounds.

Only two Evansville players got more than 3 rebounds and they were led by 6-0 guard Troy Taylor.
Colt Ryan took surprisingly few shots - going 5-8 and only 1-3 from 3-pt, but he played over 30 minutes as did Holmes.
Play was sloppy with UE having 17 turnovers (Ryan had 5) and DePauw had 24 turnovers, and there were 49 total fouls!

Lincoln HS's Jordan Nelson played only 5 minutes and missed his only shot - a 3-pointer. Wonder if he'll redshirt?

Missouri State had their 2nd exhibition beating William Jewell 90-49...
this game also was a mismatch -
Weems was 8-12 with 21 pts/5 rebs, and 10 players scored, transfer Mike Bizoukas had 10 assists.
The starters were just 3-12 from 3-pt range, but they cleaned up on the boards and had a commanding 40-20 advantage in the paint.
    Attendance 3125

    SIU plays UIS today

Dayton beats DII NAIA Walsh 92-78 shooting over 50%, but Walsh was still within 8 in the final 2 minutes.
Two MVC transfers played - Kevin Dillard with 16 pts, & Josh Parker
Walsh had only 7 players available for the game and a couple of their players had to go 38 & 39 minutes, but they outrebounded Dayton 37-32 and hit 47% on 3-pointers

    UNC-W beat St.Andrews 80-69
    Pitt over D-III LaRoche 101-33...Pitt hit 60% on FG & 3-pointers while LaRoche was 25% & 7%
    BYU beat Midwestern State 91-74
Mississippi State beat Florida Tech 97-63, Renardo Sidney 11 pts
    Vermont beat St. Michael's at Patrick's 64-31

#6 Duke beat D-II Bellarmine 87-62 - But Bellarmine played well for a while -
trailing by only 32-31 in the final two minutes of the 1st half...

BU women go to Northwestern for a closed scrimmage today

SIU is currently at half vs. Illinois Springfield..

score is 40-26 with Justin Bocot having 19 of SIU's 40...almost all on layups and FTs...
Very few actual outside shots being made....SIU shot 27 FT in the FIRST HALF!!!!!!!
      Based on a few tweets....
Kendall Brown-Surles is not dressed...nor is Davante Drinkard, Diamond Taylor, nor Antonio Bryer
Jeff Early - who was recruited by Bradley, is said to be a poor shooter and his former juco teammate Lindsay apparently was benched for his play.
Seck fwas less effective when he's the only post presence they have to guard.

Down to final 12 minutes - SIU up 52-35..looks like they are going to pick up an exhibition win

in the first half UIS was 10-29 and SIU was 11-29 -- the difference was SIU lived on the FT line

Creighton has finished their closed (and secret) scrimmage with Colorado.
Though no oficial reports of stats or results can be reported by NCAA rules, we have heard that Creighton handled Colorado quite easily in the scrimmage.

SIU full court pressed them and used various double and triple teams
..."What we learned is that we have some pretty good quickness out front," Lowery said.
"I think we can pressure the ball, and in our transition offense, I think we can get a lot done."
Point guards T.J. Lindsay and Kourtney Goff provided full-court ball pressure for SIU, constantly harassing Springfield's guards.
"We have multiple defenders that can get after the ball," Lowery said. "We had five second calls and near-five second calls,
and we forced their best guy into stressful situations."

The combination of quick guards and athletic bigs allowed SIU to trap more often in the half court,
a strategy it used to employ with much success.
"We really frustrated them and we made them stop doing anything with ball screens..."

..and yet the turnovers were pretty equal against a team with NO D-I ballhandlers- 23-20

                  Some more exhibition basketball news...

Detroit clobbered NAIA Madonna University 112-52 with Ray McCallum getting 17 pts/8 assists - attendance 1600
Preseason mid-major All American (and ex-IU Hoosier) Eli Holman is suspended indefinitely- *Link*
Oddly - one other player (PJ Boutte) who was just arrested for underage drinking and weapons - did play.

Florida State beat Indiana University-Pennsylvania 80-51

Georgia State smashed Southern Poly 90-65 but the news here is that one time Indiana Hoosier
who was also a Bradley recruit, Brandon McGee,
"dropped a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards" - off the bench...
