The UniBombers goin against number 17 washington tonight at 9:30- here's what cbssportsline says
Washington's frontcourt players may be well known, but the Huskies' guards could soon garner equal attention.
No. 17 Washington looks for another dominant outside shooting performance when it hosts Northern Iowa in the final game of the Basketball Travelers Classic on Tuesday.
The Huskies (2-0) were an impressive 17 of 33 (51.5 percent) from beyond the arc Monday as they cruised to a 102-74 win over Nicholls State. Reserve guard Brandon Burmeister led the effort, hitting 5 of 8 from 3-point range en route to a career-high 17 points.
"I probably should have taken one or two more," Burmeister said.
Just a week ago, the senior guard was suffering painful headaches and complications from a spinal tap, but showed no ill effects Monday.
"If we play Franklin High School or the Los Angeles Lakers, Brandon Burmeister is going to play well. He is just steady and you can always count on him," Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar said. "He played like a senior out there today."
Sophomore guard Justin Dentmon went 4-for-5 from long range, finishing with 16 points, and leads Washington with seven 3-pointers this season. The Huskies are proving tough to defend as much of their opponents' attention has focused on forwards Quincy Pondexter and Jon Brockman, freeing up the outside shooters.
The forwards haven't been too shabby, either. Brockman recorded his second double-double in as many games Monday. Pondexter added 14 points after a 21-point effort in his collegiate debut in Sunday's 99-91 victory over Pepperdine.
Highly touted freshman center Spencer Hawes struggled to score four points Monday after recording 12 off the bench in the opener. The 6-foot-11 Hawes also had only two rebounds against Nicholls State after hauling down five boards versus Pepperdine.
Washington has been strong on the boards, outrebounding its opponents 86-52, but has recorded 24 turnovers in each game this season. The Huskies will try to limit that number when they put their 19-game home-winning streak against non-conference opponents on the line Tuesday.
Washington has won those 19 games by an average of 27.2 points, but could face a stiff challenge from Northern Iowa.
After a slim victory in their season-opener over Nicholls State, the Panthers (2-0) routed Pepperdine 83-58 rout on Monday. Northern Iowa had an impressive offensive showing, hitting 57.7 percent (30 of 52) of its shots from the floor including 9 of 12 from 3-point range.
Sophomore guard Travis Brown recorded 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Panthers while Brooks McKowen added 11 points. Four other players had nine.
Northern Iowa dominated the boards, outrebounding the Waves 41-18.
The Huskies and Panthers have each made three straight NCAA appearances. This is the first meeting between the schools.
