A boyhood hero. Back in the day, when the jump shot was a phenomenon of sorts, we grade schoolers use to strive to abandon the two-handed set shot, elevate and emulate the two local jump-shooting stars ... Paul Unruh at BU and Don Mathews at Spalding. In recent years, it was always a treat for us to encounter Don at breakfast at Childers. He always had a new joke (and a lot of old ones), stories of the good old days, and a cheery word for every one. He'll be missed. Our sympathy to Eddie and the entire Mathews family.

I saw him at the red/white scrimmage ... ... ...
..... having the grand opportunity of saying hello and chatting with him a few minutes ahead of all of the festivities. I attended Brimfield High School starting the fall of 1978 and he was my first year English teacher, stemming within me a love for this particular subject of written story telling. His tales in school always prescient and respect for every one in the class was the highest as we were learning best from a man who truly knew how to lead. Eddie was a senior my freshman year giving me the chance of meeting on many an occasion a true gentleman, Dick Versace, then and there telling me Bradley, indeed, was where I needed to go to college.
Don was never too busy to share a moment with any one for any reason and knowing he has taken this next step from life here to life above warms my heart immensely. It was an honor knowing him. A privilege as well. GOD Bless, Mister Mathews. GOD Bless!!!There has got to be some place we can go to have fun!
