  • ESPN grades MVC teams' strength of nonconference schedules

ESPN grades MVC teams' nonconference schedules. Bradley's rates near the top. ISU's is at the bottom (what's new?)

All week, ESPN.com has been breaking down the nonconference schedules of each and every team in a dozen different leagues. On Tuesday, we began with the ACC, SEC and C-USA.

I think the Valley did a very good job of scheduling on the whole, ISU red and surprisingly Creighton being the big exceptions. Actually Creighton plays a lot of name teams, just mostly mediocre ones. We once again here of Northwestern possibly making the NCAA Tournament this season, but expect NIT or worse from them until proven otherwise. That would not make for a great opponent for Creighton if that happens. I do think they should have been given a little more credit for playing San Diego State on the road, and the Selection Committee needs to equate them to a BCS team, especially if they are as good as they were last year, which unfortunately I don't know offhand how good they will be this year. The rest of Creighton's schedule is lacking a bit, and this is not the first year this has happened recently. They need to start scheduling like the class of the Valley they used to be.

And regarding ISU red, well the less said the better! This team needs to be thrown out of the Valley, and if they weren't our most heated rivals, I would be first in line to show them the door! At the very least, Doug Elgin needs to step in and get after them because they are an embarrassment to the Valley! They need to realize that these weak schedules not only hurt them, but the Valley as a whole with regards to the conference strength of schedule. And if they are wondering why the Valley has had single bids the last four years, well a lot of it has to due with them.
