  • TCU stiffs the Big East and switches to the Big 12

Four days after TCU president Victor J. Boschini Jr. assured Big East commissioner John Marinatto that his school was committed to joining the conference next season as planned, the Horned Frogs are Big 12-bound instead, according to a leading college official.

Just a little less than a year ago, TCU surprised everyone by agreeing to join the Big East for all sports. It was to become official July, 2012-

Wonder if Big 12 TV Revenue sharing deal caused TCU to change its mind?

I thought it would be neat if all the FBS schools in Tx would form their own Div in a new Super Big 12 Conference ..Something like:

      Texas ................. Ia State
      TCU ................... Missouri
      Tex A&M ............. Kansas
      SMU ................... Kansas St
      Texas Tech ......... Oklahoma
      Baylor ................ Okla St
UTEP ................. Boise State (or New Mexico State)
      Houston ............. New Mexico

When all is said and done, there will be 4-5 x 12 or 16 team 'super conferences' in the US which will form their own NCAA like organization and manage their own playoffs/bowls and tv/merchandise revenues.

As usual, it had mostly to do with football, quality of play in the Big East vs. Big 12, and football revenues. Big 12 football is way better than the Big East, even with the defections the Big 12 has had to the SEC. I suspect TCU always wanted to get into the Big 12 and renew their natural rivalries that disappeared when the Southwest Conference fell apart in 1996 and Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech joined the Big 8 to make it the Big 12. Since leaving the SWC in 1996 (1923-1996), TCU moved to the WAC (1996-2000), the C-USA (2000-2004), the Mountain West Conference (2004-2011), the Big East, and the Big 12, probably setting a record for most conference affiliations in a 15 year span (6 different conferences).

Yeah, I imagine TCU always wanted the Big 12 above the Big East but the opportunity arose just now to get in the Big 12. They initially went to the Big East just so they could have a seat at the BCS table but as it turned out, they never needed it.

When a school is willing to pay a $5 Million exit fee to a conference that they never even played one game in then you know the ship has already sunk. RIP Big East.
