UCLA has won 11 NCAA basketball championships, the most all time.
Kentucky is second with seven.
Yet Kentucky coach John Calipari says the Wildcats could have approached UCLA??™s total if the one-and-done rule were not in effect.
???It??™s not the ??™70s,??? he said...???Could you imagine if I had these guys three and four years? It would be UCLA.???

A rather arrogant statement, IMO. If not for the 1 and done rule, probably Calipari wouldn't have gotten many of the players that helped him win his 1 and only national championship. BTW, John Wooden won 10 national championships, including 7 in a row.

He may have, but he likely would have been caught cheating sooner as well.

Exactly. With all that talent stockpiled his players would have gotten bitter and disenfranchised, not to mention all the egotistical infighting and backstabbing. They would have left UK for other programs and word would have gotten out about all of the under-the-table payments being made. By going immediately to the pros (and a fat paycheck) there is no incentive for them to turn on Calipari.

John Calipari should not even be allowed to coach college basketball after all the cheating he has done. What a snake oil salesman!

Believe me I am a huge John Wooden fan, and agree on the "snakeoil salesman" description of John Calapari.

However, I don't think we want to throw too many stones as not to bring up the whole Sam Gilbert and UCLA story...:(

We have a thread winner right here.

I believe the NCAA rules regarding recruiting and intermediaries were far different then. Much of what would be illegal now was not against the rules back then.

Agreed. Let's also remember that after the NCAA investigated they found that no infractions occurred under Wooden. All infractions and penalties were applied to the Larry Brown era.
