  • Drake loses a player

Frank Wiseler, who was Drake's starting point guard for about half of the 2009-10 season and the first half of last season, has given up basketball due to a series of injuries.

Wiseler was ok, but ultimately, he just wasn't strong enough or tough enough to be an effective player at this level.

In a different spin on recruiting, he recruited Drake, rather than Drake recruiting him. He first tried to interest Keno Davis when Keno was coach....Keno said "thanks, but no thanks". After Keno left, Wiseler sent tapes to Phelps, who signed him shortly after taking over.

Tough luck for him. From what I saw of Wiseler, he looked like a borderline D1 player.
Maybe he will find a spot with a D2 or lower level school.

tough break for a kid who came a long way to play college ball and stuck with it unlike Staiger, Mekel, and a few others

Drake fans aren't exactly broken up about this. If anything, Wiseler was the brunt of a lot of the fans' ire last season over on the drakenation message board.

I just wish he had made this decision several months ago, so they could have used his scholarship to land another player.

Drake loses a player from their 2014-15 roster. 6'8" sophomore Blake Danielak is leaving. He only played in 7 games for them this season and never scored a point. As a freshman, he averaged 3.9 ppg and actually started 4 games, but a broken hand ended his season. He was a late signee in May, 2013 just after Ray Giacoletti became coach.
