  • MVC Expansion

Here's some news that has NOT been widely discussed....

The Missouri Valley has been looking to expand and one current new D-I hopeful - independent was actually slated to JOIN the Missouri Valley in baseball...and it is rumored that Oral Roberts may also join giving the Valley 12 baseball members...

    But.....
now DBU is being pursued by another conference, the WAC, and Doug Elgin is bummed....

DALLAS -- Dallas Baptist University could be placed in its first Division I conference as soon as the end of next year.DBU’s baseball program will have a provisional year with the Missouri Valley Conference next season, meaning the Patriots will have a full MVC schedule but will not be listed in the standings or play in the conference tournament.

BTW -- Dallas Baptist has produced 11 major league baseball players including this well known Major Leaguer --

Sorry. I had just posted adding Dallas Baptist would be a horrible move in basketball, but I guess I should read the articles first! They and Oral Roberts would be great for their baseball conference, and I hope Dallas Baptist reconsiders joining the WAC.

So are we trying to pick up FB or BB schools? Sorry, I haven't had the time to read the article.

maybe down the road they might be good (ORU already is) and join in basketball...

Expanding the MVC is just not going to cut it for the viability of BU basketball playing at the highest level. JG's legacy at BU will be determined greatly by where BU lands in this changing landscape. The status quo will not cut it IMHO and I doubt sticking with the current MVC brand will cut the mustard. This is the time to be pro-active in building a basketball centric conference with national recognition. I'm afraid to tell most of you the Valley has lost its luster and its markets will not bring in the revenue needed to make it a premier conference.

Baseball D-I hopeful Dallas Baptist snubs the Valley and heads to the WAC in 2013

BUT -- for at least one year they will be an affiliate member of the Missouri Valley...

"For the 2012 season, Dallas Baptist will participate in a scheduling agreement with the Missouri Valley Conference
which allows the Patriots to play a full MVC schedule but does not permit DBU to play in the conference tournament.
To once again compete in an NCAA Regional, the Patriots must earn an at-large bid from the tournament committee."

I agree. Even the Valley of 4 or 5 years ago would probably not stand up during this time of change.

I think a midwest based conference of basketball only schools would work well. Which ones would fit I don't know, but I'd be glad to trade out Indiana St. and Evansville for Butler and Oral Roberts. That would be a great start. Add Xavier and Dayton and we may have something. I suppose DePaul would have to be added as well, and hopefully they get better with time.

DePaul, SLU, Butler, Creighton, Marquette and Xavier would be the cornerstone to a mid-west basketball conference with private schools. DePaul would be a must for its market potential and TV draw. How do you think they ended up in the Big East?

Now the latest rumor of MVC expansion...

Air Force is said to be staying in the Mountain West for FOOTBALL only and
possibly going to the Missouri Valley for all other sports!

but a number of other recent articles have speculated Air Force to CUSA, Big East, and other conferences also...

It'd be GREAT for the MVC to pick up a school with as big a name as Air Force!

Agreed completely, big move if we make it. Glad to see a mid-major besides the MWC being pro-active. Not to mention it would easily be the best academic institution in the Valley, particularly in engineering.

I wonder if the AFA could compete with the SIU aviation program?

Oh shoot, that was BU's claim to fame hahaha I don't know what they'll do about the sports they don't have like fencing and such mentioned in the article.

There's talk that Air Force, whether they move conferences or not, is worried about competitiveness in the MWC for all sports and want to downgrade. So I don't think this is a slam dunk for the MVC but you probably make the move.

In other news, I've heard Oral Bob get linked to talks with the Southland. I thought they'd shoot higher.

Air Force not a good fit for the Valley.
