  • Conference Realignment... AGAIN

With the possible breakup of the Big XII, my thoughts turn to how this may positively affect the MVC. I think the possibility of Iowa State or Kansas or Kansas State joining the MVC is fairly reasonable if the conference collapses. Iowa State definitely would be a possibility for me, but what does everyone think? It would be hard for them and Kansas to give up football methinks, but Missouri State has a decent program. Thoughts?
... At the end, of the storm, there's a golden sky. And the sweet silver song of the lark. Walk on, through the wind, walk on, through the rain, though your dreams be tossed, and blown. Walk on, Walk on with hope in your hearts, and you'll never walk alone!

    Decent football program?

We won't get them. The Big East has interest in Kansas, Kansas St, and Missouri, and the Mountain West would have interest in everybody that doesn't end up with a BCS home.

MVC, not having FBS football, is in a bad position to go out and pick up assets unless those assets don't have football either.

Then again, literally about every scenario in the history of history could be in play once we have a 16-team football conference in existence.

Yeah, IMO. They're one of the better in the Valley, then again, I don't really follow the Valley for football XD

That last part was pretty much what I was going on hahaha. All the original 8 were members of the MVC at one point... maybe it's time for a change back?

Most likely the Big XII won't dissolve entirely and disappear, so I don't think the MVC should be concerned about which Big XII team we should look to absorb. Just the opposite, the Big XII will look to replace Texas A&M and might look at picking off an MVC team, though since football is so important to them, I am not sure there is any school in the MVC with a strong enough football team.

No one in the Valley has good enough football programs to compete in D-1 football plus the overall cost would keep this from happening.

Yeah, I think they'll poach the entirety of CUSA before they think about a MVC team.

There is one theoretical scenario that could play out - the MVC could become Big East lite with 8 football schools and 8 non football schools, as the football schools move up to FBS. No one in the league is a candidate for one of the superconferences, so this league trying to become the next CUSA for football and Big East Lite for basketball could work.

Iowa State because of geography & poor success the past few years might end up an orphan and beg to get in the MVC, MWC, or CUSA...

The strongest thing arguing against that is that football - as bad as it's been over the past couple decades, still draws 45-50,000

Ha ha! I would love Kansas to become part of the Valley, but methinks whatever you are smoking BUfanatic is contributing to your wishful thinking.

Good point. They will look for a football only conference even if they are winless in basketball the next five years, as long as they draw a robust number of fans for their team

If the Big XII is forced to scavange for new members, it looks to me like their best targets would be from Conference USA.

If they lose OU, the big 12 I think falls apart. I have a couple big conferences lined up for when the "elite" money schools leave everyone (ncaa included) behind.

The way Bob Stoops is talking about everything, it sounds like OU wants to burn every bridge possible. It's like OU is on a power trip to prove to everyone they're as important as Texas. And the power trip is going to bury the league (although it might've been buried already without it).

HEY! I can dream can't I? KU hasn't done well in football, that's the only reason I mention it.

The power trip is not only OU. It's OU, Texas, Texas A&M, and to some extent OSU. Don't be surprised if Missouri pops in there soon too.
