The 2008 IHSA Class 4A title game was between Jeremy Richmond's Waukegan HS and Marcus Jordan, Chris Colvin, & Ahmad Starks' Chicago Whitney Young HS.
Young won 69-66..
But reportedly for the 2.5 years since that game there have been persistent rumors
that more than one player on the Whitney Young team had serious questions about their eligibility.
That the players ended up at Whitney Young via recruitment and not via the proper channels (see below).
The press has supposedly been asking IHSA questions and finally Marty Hickman -- the chief guy at IHSA - now speaks out on this topic for the first time since March 2009.
He says basically that there are serious concerns about a couple players' eligibility, but....
but Hickman claims that the IHSA has just been too danged busy and has not had any time to look into it -- thus it is an issue that's still "on the back burner" ...
Almost half a year ago in response to a reporter's questions -- Hickman "promised" there would be an investigation and the facts would be made known -- but....IHSA seems to work a lot like NCAA ..
"Hickman has yet to pursue the matter beyond a conversation with a
city school official.
"To be honest, at this point, it's kind of been on the back burner and it's kind
of stayed there," he told the Tribune this week. "There have been other
pressing matters."
Here's the article from last spring...this story's original title was...
"Whitney Young boys basketball team won title in year it wasn't supposed to be in the playoffs" ...
One of the recruiting violations was in regard to the Illini's Crandall Head --
but they don't identify the two ineligible students except to say only one
appeared in the Title game.
Also in this story -- the Tribune discovered that the Chicago Public Schools' authority violated their OWN RULES when they failed to suspend the Whitney Young coach and prohibit the Young team from playing in the playoffs.
According to their own rules at the time -- since their coach Tyrone Slaughter was found to have violated recruiting rules -- he should have been banned from the IHSA playoffs AND the entire team should have ALSO been banned. Seems harsh but that's what the rules require -- and yet the CPS did not act according to their own rules.
Guess what they did in response to the Trib reporter pointing out that they failed to properly enforce the the rules that were in effect -- they eliminated the rule that they had violated...they just changed their rules!!
"Also..the Chicago Board of Education on Wednesday removed a provision
from its athletics bylaws that automatically bans a team from participating in
playoffs when its head coach is found to have violated recruiting rules.
.. the Tribune reported about the rule and a 2008 recruiting violation by
Whitney Young coach Tyrone Slaughter that should have banned the 2009
team.
Slaughter received a six-game suspension, but Davis did not enforce the
playoff penalty
Slaughter, who became Young's head coach in 2005, went on to receive
another suspension, for recruiting violations, earlier this year. He now has
three."
