Wichita State loses their first and second games on tour of Brazil
Wichita State loses their first and second games on tour of Brazil
Wichita State has begun their tour of Brazil. They played their first game today, and they lost to the Brazilian professional club, the Palmerias Sports Club, 81-76.
All that is reported is this brief announcement of the final score-
Sao Paulo, Brazil - The Wichita State Shockers were defeated by the Brazilian professional club, the Palmerias Sports Club, 81-76 on Tuesday in their first game of their 10-day trip in Brazil.
Just got a first hand report of the game -- they played one of the tougher pro teams in Brazil --
Joe Ragland and Demetric Williams played very well as did 6-3 freshman guard Tekele Cotton.
They played a "5th quarter" after that game and WSU won it 15-8.
The Shocks are certainly seeking out far better competition in Brazil than UNI did on their "bonding" tour. At 4pm central time, WSU plays the Brazilian national team. Though it's rumored their three NBA guys may not play. Don't know why.
Reports from the practices leading up to the trip were that Ragland and Williams have taken huge steps forward. Smith is improved. Not much info on anyone that I recall, other than Stutz is being a more vocal leader.
It's encouraging to hear about Cotton. He and Evan Wessell (and possibly Ede Egharevbe) were thought to be redshirt candidates due to all the upperclassmen guards.

My son-in-law coached against Cotton last season. He thought WSU was going to get a good one
Wichita State loses again in Brazil. Today (Wed 8/10) they played a team of players trying out for the Brazilian National team and got blown out 87-61.
Sao Paulo, Brazil - The Brazilian National team beat the Wichita State Shockers, 87-61 on Wednesday in the second of five games on their 10-day trip to Brazil.
Today is cut day for that team. Marshall made comments after the game that even if WSU were to make the NCAA championship game, their opponent would not be as good as the BRA team was last night. They also played with a 24-second shot clock, which I understand is quite an adjustment for a college team used to getting 35-seconds to run their sets.
The great thing is that everyone on the roster, including the likely redshirts, are getting PT. They are really getting a look at what it takes to compete at a high level.
but I disagree that because it is "cut day" that makes them a tougher team--
if anything - their coach likely played all the guys who were on the bubble, the guys who were a notch below the abilities of the rest of the team so he could determine who should be cut...
Plus -- doesn't the Brazil team have four guys who are NBA or high-level pro caliber, but those four all missed this game, right?...
