  • Update on Coach Les

Jim Les was spotted at an AAU event in Indianapolis recently so it looks like he is going to continue recruiting the midwest...

One recruiting service reported that Coach Les offered two Class of 2012 kids...from Indiana Elite, Kellon Thomas and Jared Drew

also - UC-Davis releases their 2011-2012 schedule. I am guessing much of this was already determined for Jim Les but maybe the game that UC-Davis gets HOSTING Pac-10 Stanford is due to Jim's influence...
UC-Davis also gets to go to San Diego State plus they have a nice road trip game @ Hawaii...plus a 16 game full home-and-home conference schedule.

Their nicest road game, though, is on 12/17 when they get UCLA away from Pauley Pavilion - something very, very few teams outside the Pac-10 ever do.
They play UCLA at the Anaheim Honda Pavilion, as planned construction will force the UCLA Bruins to play their home games at alternative sites.
UCLA plays FOUR games at the Anaheim Honda Center - which is also home to UC-Davis' conference tournament, The Big West Conference Tournament.
UCLA also plays 12 of their home games at the Los Angeles Sports Arena - right next to the campus of USC.

"Getting a marquee matchup like Stanford and having Johnny Dawkins
willing to come here and play us is huge for our program and for our fans,"
said Les. "Those are the kinds of games that we want to try and schedule going forward."

The way scheduling works (the evaluation of them anyway), that game is perfect for Stanford -- it's close by, technically a road game (which helps the RPI), their fans will dominate the arena and they'll win.

Georgia Tech did the same thing a few years ago with a pretty bad Georgia State team.

If Jim gets them going - which I think he can - those Pac 10 teams will let his calls go to voice mail when he calls.

All-in-all, that looks like a nice non-conference schedule for a team coming off a pretty bad season. It has winnable games, games that are toss ups and games against teams they likely won't beat, but will provide good experience for the team going forward.

Wonder if Hersey Hawkins had a role in scheduling the Stanford game. Hawkophiles will recall that Johnny Dawkins and Hersey are the very best of friends, dating back to their days in the backcourt for the Sixers. JL and Hawk are tight...Hawk's kid is heading to UC-D...

The last time Stanfurd made the trek to UC Davis was in 2005....and they lost. They did not "dominate the arena" and that was against a transitioning Aggie team. If anything it is a tough game for the Cardinal, they are coming into a gym where the home team has nothing to lose.
