  • Steve Alford bans all tweeting by his players

    I like this idea....really --

I could go either way on the issue. Ideally I think all responsible use should be taught instead of banning, with special emphasis on Web information haunting you later in life.

Bradley's career center encourages students to use social media in their job search, so I really don't think banning social media is truly in the student's best interest. (I'm sure a coach's job may be easier, though)

Here's a bit more strange breaking news from University of New Mexico where Steve Alford is at...

Somebody did an audit of the UNM Basketball department and the audit came up with a $4000 cash shortage as well as other suspicious misuse of university money --
hmmm.....so how does $4000 of school/athletic dept./and taxpayer money just disappear???
Well -- it didn't "just disappear" -- it appears it was stolen and the UNM athletic department knew it was missing but hid that fact from everyone including the police! (which was apparently done to help hide the identity of the guilty party)

"An audit faults University of New Mexico Athletics Vice President Paul Krebs
for not reporting sooner the disappearance of $4,000 from a UNM basketball team office.
...."the cash.....went missing... from a locked filing cabinet."

also, the cash .."went missing under the watch of an unidentified team employee, but no police report was filed.."
"The employee still works for the basketball team."

Hmmm... if someone stole $4000 of yours or that you were responsible for, wouldn't you call police -- and about the only reason you wouldn't is if you feared the police's involvement??

"An athletics official contacted UNM police for “advice,” but did not file a criminal complaint, despite being told to do so by the UNM police chief, according to the audit"

"The audit also said the athletics department violated UNM policies by paying family travel expenses for the postseason tournament.
It says about $8,000 in airfare and $3,000 in other expenses for family members during the 2010 tournament were wrongly billed to the university.
Those travel expenses were paid directly by university accounts"

so here is New Mexico's final solution for this problem...
"..all athletics employees who handle money are required to undergo training in cash management... that training is scheduled in September."

While I was reading this -- I saw this about an ad for New Mexico Lobos football -- their logo this year...
        Bigger, Faster, Stronger...
        ...sound familiar???

Much better approach would be to hold a seminar on best practice of social media. Then set some parameters on how they can use twitter (such as never drink and tweet). Let's face it like it or not these forms of communication are out there and the individuals or corporations that learn how to use them responsibly will be better off. I've talked to recruiters and they have all said if you use social media wisely it can help. I thought college was about teaching not limiting. I'm glad that BU is encouraging our student body to adapt their skills around social media. I for one am not a big user but can see the positive effect it can have. All in moderation though.
