  • The Most Hyped Basketball Recruits of All Time

Here's an interesting and fun article -- ranking the most hyped high school kids ...
Nice flashback on Rick Mount, Pete Maravich, Candace Parker, Tamir Goodman (the Jewish Jordan), but...
I really can't believe this guy left off the entire "Fab Five" and Sebastian Telfair...

I think Damon Bailey was pretty hyped as well.

      Very much so!!!

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

they mention Bailey, Alford, and more in the spot on Rick Mount - who was NATIONALLY hyped and
who was the first high schooler ever to make the cover of Sports Illustrated
-- and hint by contrast that it was pretty much just one college coach and the fans in one state that actually thought much of Bailey..

Damon Bailey was never on Sports Illustrated until he was senior in college

Bailey may not have been on the SI cover, but A Season on the Brink by John Feinstein is all the publicity he needed.

He talks about Telfair a bit. There's not much to say about him, unfortunately. It seemed like most people realized he was all hype from the start. Good read.

Over hyped as players today...yeah...But as the article states, the Fab Five symbolized a cultural shift in the game that is still evident today. The Fab Five IMHO turned out to be better college players than Damon Bailey as well. The hype on Bailey from Knight stating that Bailey was better than any IU guard in "A Season on the Brink" while Bailey was in eighth grade turned out to be very excessive and to a degree unfair to Bailey. imo

funny how the kids dream of getting this level of hype from the time they are toddlers...

then when they get the hype -- they complain that the hype is too much and puts too much presure on them...

To be fair to Damon Bailey, he was pretty darn good.

Finished his career 6th on IU's scoring list, 3rd team AA, a Final Four appearance and first team all-Big Ten.

He had a better college career than Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, for sure, and was at least on par with Howard's - in terms of accolades.

He definitely wasn't an NBA-caliber player, though.
